Re: In search of the ELUSIVE OST Vest Fabric for D-I-Yers
You probably should put Jack Sparrow in the title, as there is also Angelica's vest fabric being searched for........
Dragging this over here from my post in another thread to save some typing time.
I bought a yard of the stuff on a just because I didn't want to later have 'didn't buy' remorse, and so I'd have it to take around on searching expeditions. So if there is anything about it or any questions about it that you think I might be able to tell you or answer from having it here to look at and examine, please ask.
For those who didn't save the info, or anyone just now joining the hunt,
here is the only information Fabric guru had on the stuff.
Code: 151431.2
Product: High End Embroidered Silk Drapery or Light Duty Upholstery Fabric in Clay
Storage Loc.: E14
Unit Price:$14.99
Everyone calls it red, but Clay is the color it was listed as.

I have taken the fabric around to some high end stores here in the Houston area. Have been told by their "resident experts" that the base fabric is silk dupioni.
Silk dupioni is woven with two colors of fibers and that gives it that every changing sheen. It needs to be dry cleaned to perserve that, washing it will certainly dumb down the shimmerness of it. This particular Clay color has dark orange terra cotta colored lenthwise threads and medium gold (not metalic) crosswise threads.
A lot of inquires have been made using the picture from fabricguru, and many are being replied to that this is a brocade fabric. It is not. The designs on brocade are woven in via extra weft thread that are raised and lowered differently from the regular weft threads to create a design IN the weave.
This fabric from fabricguru is definitely embroidered, no doubt about it. And it is completely reversible, looks EXACTLY the same on both sides. It does not have a wrong side.
From my
burn test, it seems the dark redish brown threads making the design is also silk. It MIGHT have a bit of cotton in it, I thought I detected a bit of that paper smell, but it is definite 100% natural fiber, no synthetic in it--no melty plastic globs in the ash.
Here are some pics I took a couple of weeks ago, they were rushed and are not the greatest, but do get the point/s across....
This one shows that two different embroideries on it, the thin zigzag-ish pattern and the heavier one

This is showing both sides of the fabric, how it is completely reversible.

This is an awful picture, but you can see the size and density of the threads......

Another trying to show the size of the weave and embroidery threads....and not very successful....

these last two are pics I captured from fabricguru before they "ran out" of the stuff and took the pics away.
They are better than the ones I took except maybe for some details in my two close-ups???
Their close up

Their wide shot, shows measurements so you can kinda figure the pattern repeat.

When Sparrowed first posted the picture of the fabric and the link, I went and ordered a yard of it. When you order fabrics online, they usually send you a little over the exact yardage, so this piece is really about 40 inches.......and 1 yard is more than I'd ever need if I ever decided to strip and dye this puppy and go for making an OST vest......which I really have no desire to do......
SO......if anyone willing to help in the search wants a sample to have in hand to take with you to fabric stores and warehouses to show them what you are looking for, and take also a print out picture of it so they can see the whole pattern........and promise to SHARE the information if you find the fabric or anything at all about it..................then.............
If you'll send me an SASE, I'll send out little snippets till the 4 inch overage is gone. PM me for a mailing addy.
Okay, I gotta get off here. I have a VERY IMPORTANT after dinner date that I absolutely can't be late for!! :lol
Happy Huntin' Y'all..............
