In case you have not seen Captain America 1990

But a great looking shield. I have been looking for one like that for many years - love the raised sections over the typical just flat painted look.

I was fortunate to get a copy of that Shield years ago, although an accurate Comic book Shield should be concave without any raised sections...

I saw this back in 93 I think it was along side Punisher when I was in the hospital with my rattle snake bite. It could have been the morphine, but it was decent... Who the hell am I kidding, it was only tolerable because of the morphine.

I was heavy into Marvel comics back then and this and Punisher were abominations. At least Cappy looked the part and had his signature shield unlike the monstrosity that was Punisher whose only Punisher Skull was on those knives.

Man, I wish i had some of that right now

I like that the Red Skull isn't a guy with a red skull. At least they tried with Skeletor in the 80's Masters of the Universe movie.

I've seen this once, on some channel at like 2 in the morning. I really can't say that I plan on watching it again. Ever.

I still have to find and watch the never released Fantastic Four, just to say I've seen it.

Yes the shield did look good. I'm trying to decide if the Captain America made for TV movie was better - you know the one where he has the motorcycle that launches out of the back of a van. I saw it when it first ran and I can't recall if they did it in the early '80's or late '70's.

Yeah, it's pretty horrible... I still have a laserdisc copy of it though. Of course I haven't had my player even hooked up in about 6 years.

I certainly won't defend it in any way but I personally like the - for lack of a better way of describing it - the sort of innocent naivete they ascribe to this very patriotic guy misplaced out of the 1940's.

Besides the movie's obvious flaws, the only one that really, REALLY bugs me still is this... why are his ears rubber? Seriously... wouldn't it have been cheaper to simply cut holes in the cowl? Besides that, it's a faithful interpretation of the costume that shouldn't work for me but it kinda does.

I remember seeing teaser posters in a theater for this and reading a Starlog interview with Scott Paulin about how they made the Red Skull an Italian (???!!!) and then...nothin'. It just disappeared. About two years later I got to see a bootleg copy and found out why.

In the article Paulin was really excited about the project because he had loved Captain America comics when he was a kid, loved how much of the original source the script had captured, and defended the altering of the Red Skull character arc. And there is a lot of "the origin" and situations and actions depicted very closely to the comics. Some shots are taken almost directly from Jack Kirby drawings. Unfortunately it was all just B. A. D.

It's amazing how far down a hack director can drag a project. The performers are mostly seasoned professionals, there is an attempt to stay faithful to the source material--at least at the beginning, and the results speak for themselves.

I got to see the bootleg in a double feature with the unreleased Fantastic 4 movie and it's almost a contest to out-bad each other. Both are best enjoyed in the company of any Robot Friends...

That is sweet - I hope to find a copy someday.
And while that is true about the comic - it is one of those things that is a victim of the medium. Lots of things in comics get limited in design by the need to be quickly & consistently replicated by hand. Translating something into the real world allows for a bit more 3-D in the design. (much like Spidey's raised webbing on the costume - very true to the spirit of what would have been his costume, but unrealistic in a drawing to be repeated over and over)
ANYWAY - bad film with a great shield!

Ugh. Save yourself the desire to gouge your eyes out and skip FF. The guy who ran the comic shop I used to frequent back in the day had a bootleg copy... To call it horrible is being kind.

With how things are today I'd be surprised if the new movie did well. If you modified it to today he'd probably have bad driving skills, always be on an iPhone and butting in to other countries' affairs where he doesn't belong.

I remember for ten years on the convention circuit, every time you passed a bootleg dealer's table they'd be playing Fantastic Four on the tv. I've never seen it, but I sure feel like I have just from the few minutes I've endured here and there.

I have yet to see a faithful version of Captain America on TV or a Movie Version, I met the Actor (Reb Brown) from the TV version and was very disappointed how much of a Thug he really was (Bragged endlessly of Beating up people in everyday life)!

His costume was Close to the Comics version with the exception of the Motorcycle Helmet and the Transparent Shield!

The Direct to Video Movie was Laughable and the Costume was close but no Cigar!

I remember hearing somewhere that on one of these cap costumes the ears were just molded as part of the mask. Which one was it...if that is even true?

Yeah, the 1990 movie starring Matt Salinger pictured above - not the 1979 tv version with the goofball motorcycle helmet - had a cowl that was made of rubber. Instead of cutting out the ear holes, the ears were rubber. There's a photo of Captain America turning his head which is causing a wrinkle in his ear. It's really, really weird. I've never heard why they did it that way... maybe they didn't like Salinger's ears or something.

I actually like the costume with the exception of the ears. I thought it worked myself but it's not what I'd want for the new movie, that's for sure.

I've seen a bootleg of the Corman FF movie and it truly is absolutely horrendous. It makes Captain America look like high art. Even that has a couple of minor things I kinda liked. I thought the sculpt for the Thing and the Dr. Doom costume were relatively nice... at least until you saw them in motion.

If you want to see something nearly as bad (but not quite) as the Corman FF though, check out the never-aired 1997 Justice League of America tv pilot with David Ogden Stiers as a fat Martian Manhunter. WOW. :ninja

Here's the fantastic four trailer by Corman

In slight defence of these two attempts at bringing the comics to life - You have to remember - ALL of Marvel's movies were bad back then and it's because Stan Lee still had say over the final shooting draft of the scripts. I read somewhere Captain America went through 32 rewrites in under a year until finally stan sat down and did a pass that would be the shooting script. Same thing happened with Dolph's Punisher and that's also why Cameron didn't do Spiderman - he wanted control over the script and Stan wouldn't back off - even after Titanic.

Fantastic Four was done so someone could hold onto the rights for a few years and in the contract it stated that if no movie was produced by a certain date then the rights reverted back to whoever - so they rushed it into production - I still laugh when Reed takes the syringe from the doctor
