Improved POTF Luke ROTJ V2 Hilt

Hey, guys! Long time lurker; first time poster.

I wanted to upgrade my Power of the Force Luke ROTJ lightsaber into a static hilt that I could knock around, wear on my belt to a con, etc. I had no budget so I planned to scrounge or build any parts I needed to improve the look of the hilt.

I started by looking at pictures of replicas of the V2 hilt for inspiration. I mainly looked at this: https://imgur.com/RKpNqLA and this: http://imperialroyalarms.com/thread/7483/lock-solos-hold-luke-rotj

  • I cut out the thick parts near the top and replaced them with a piece of 1/2” PVC pipe I had. It goes all the way from the bottom of the battery cavity up to the tip of the emitter. I reused parts from the original toy as much as I could. I filled in the gaps with putty and sanded them as smooth as I could.
  • I cut up a blue pill bottle I had and used it for the biggest part of the emitter, a ring below the control box and to use as an end cap for the pommel.
  • I sourced the cone knob from a little pen-screwdriver thing I had in my toolbox but never used. It is flat on the top but it was about the right size.
  • I made the mystery chunk out of a screw and a square of wood cut from the end of a takeout chopstick.
  • I made the d-ring out of a coat hanger.
  • I used an ESB edge connector PCB from Roy at http://wannawanga.com/products/edge-connector/ that I had bought a long time ago for another project on the control box. I was pretty impressed that the control box was more or less accurate in size.
  • I made the edges of the clamp for the PCB out of an old CD jewel case.
  • I made the clamp lever out of a plastic spoon, a screw and some washers.
I shot it with a couple of coats of primer and then started painting with some model and craft paints I had. It was super fun and I’m pretty happy with the result.

That was the first lightsaber toy that I ever owned. Love the V2 conversion. I did a similar thing with a blade builders Luke ROTJ saber for my wife's Halloween costume a couple years ago. The lever and "cone knob" have fallen off and have since disappeared, but here's a pic any way. Now I want to do another but go for the thin neck like yours!

I think I remember this saber on the shelves back in the mid 90s

What a excellent job on converting it!!

excellent found parts! I had this exact toy as well and have always been impressed with how.. almost there it was. looks like you took it there!
 
Welcome to the Forum bobmilausnic ! Way to rock out a first post! I always say, if you're gonna wait five years to do something, do it right! :D

I might have to head over the Home Depot to pick up one of those 8-in-1 screwdrivers just for that cap!

My only critique would be that you should have kept the light and sounds and maybe found a way to reattach the telescoping blade. I just have too much fun swinging mine around to make it look more accurate. ;)

Looking forward to seeing your next project... just don't take 5 years to post it up O.K.!
