IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP) update pg 10

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam new pics pg8

By the way I plan on using the Sharkmark VI helmet file and so I don't waste any foam can you give me an idea of the scale you used ie height/width of helmet? I don't plan on wearing this so size isn't an issue as long as it looks right!

Ahh I see, yes mate hey are valley cuts about 4mm deep. when pulled together & glued they form nice straight edges whilst keeping the number of pieces down. HTH

Wow that is praise indeed, Thanks.

Ok been busy this weekend & managed to get the chest coated & primed. Was a bit of a challenge getting the plastic on before it went off but did it in sections which helped. As you can see have had to use far more filler than on any other part but its getting there.

Just wondering what do you mean you did it in sections?

And what do you mean went off?

The plastic resin used for coating the foam has a pot life of 3-5 minutes which makes covering a large surface area such as the chest and back pieces a bit tricky with one pot of resin. So by dividing the chest into sections, sides ribs, arc, collar piece gives you more time to coat the smaller details and grooves. Then to blend the sections together you can sand it down or add filler to get a nice smooth surface.

Went off just means when the resin cures or hardens. Hope this helps :thumbsup

Still waiting for the foam to arrive! However, I've spent my time productively by playing with pepakura designer and modifying the pep files into what I hope will prove to be a more foam friendly version....time will tell?!

yeah man cheers, i was thinking there was some thickner or sealant spray you had to use otherwise the plastic would run off =P guess it was just strange to my eye!

Oh wow man. You're like a foam magician!! This has got to be one of the best free hand builds I've ever seen! Please keep posting pics.

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam pic heavy (WIP)

Hey Shelfside, the chest looks great! Always looking forward to your updates.

Can I ask where you got your uni-beam from? Did you buy it somewhere in the uk or did you scratch build it? Thanks

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam pic heavy (WIP)

Hi Shelfside, so my foam finally arrived and the helmet is mostly complete. I have to say i'm pretty pleased with it for a first attempt! Do you find the foam holds its shape whilst you apply the easyflo does the pva firm it up a bit? Do you easyflo the inside as well? Looking forward to your next update, i'll start a thread once i've made a bit more progress!
