IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP) update pg 10

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP) updated 24/4

Also, what was the exact colour / finish for the U-Pol power can? I've got the Grip #4, just trying to work out which Power Can you used.
The colours are not Powercans mate, I use the Grip#4, the Grey primer & the Clearcoat in powercan. The gold is Ford Solar Gold from Halfords in the UK, and the Red is Merlot/Mica Red AX5 which has to be mixed here in the UK and I get from here autopaint-pro.co.uk

Lid looks great man :)
Cheers buddy, not a patch on yours though mate.

I can't believe you started this in foam this is seriously impressive :O
Thanks bud:thumbsup

Fantastic work shelfside, still cant believe its foam your mark 3 is slowly turning into a life size action figure
Cheers mate, nice to see a few UK'ers on RPF.

More pics!!! :D
There on the way!

Absolutely the best foam bild I have seen. I am going to put my Masked Rider suit on a mannequin, and start a foam Stealth Mark 3. Well, after I finish Predator, and Judge Dredd...then I will start...yeah, that's the ticket!
Cheers mate, not sure about the best but am sure I've got a list of future builds as long as yours:D btw love the MR suits:thumbsup

I've been lurking on this forum for a week now. I have had to create an account now just to tell you how bloody awesome this build is looking! I plan to build a MKIV suit sometime soon but now you're putting me off. I know in a million years I could never make anything this good :/ Keep up the good work mate.
Thanks mate, as Drack said you'll be surprised what you can achieve if you put your mind to it so get building!

Awsome build.....alot of work for the main body parts..me thinks! !

Thanks man, will be starting chest/back soon and my biggest concern is keeping the shape right throughout.

Another question for you when coating the helmet in the resin how do you go about making sure you keep the lines and the grooves of the helmet I can imagine as I'm coating that the helmet would turn into one solid shape :D

Only apply 2 coats and brush the grooves out so not been a problem so far.

Hey man awesome build! just wondering how you got the details on the chest like that? is it two layers or did you just engrave it?
Hey mate, I use a combination of two layers, a modified soldering iron and various sockets etc heated up to form rounded holes.

What you've done so far is absolutely amazing. Does the resin make the foam rigid or does it still have some flex to it?
Thanks buddy, It is a lot more rigid but retains some flexibility.

This is a labor of love and it shows. my first suit was a "decent" build, but my paint skills destroyed it. Since I actually like the Iron Patriot suit as my favorite model, I think I am gonna try for that one this time. To say you did this all out of foam is remarkable. If I could make a helmet close to that, I'd be happy. The biggest issue for mine was that the face plate always wanted to flatten out, and the side of the jaw had a similar issue. I know that since you plastic coated the pieces it is now more rigid, but how did you get yours to hold the shape even before doing so? The foam i used prior was 6mm EVA (gym flooring)
Thanks mate, regarding the helmet I coated inside & out with resin whilst it was one piece and then applied the second coat after separating the faceplate ect. Still not as rigid as I'd like but it works ok.

Yes!! This is AWESOME... Immediately started making my look for that foam, but not seeing it in the US lol maybe its called something different here? Regardless AWESOME!!!!!! I Can't wait to see more....
Thanks very much, not sure if Plastazote is sold in the US under a different name but sure someone here can tell you. BTW loving the avatar mmmmmmm

that looks sweet man , as another uk member any chance you could tell me wich red that is and were ya got it from ??
Thanx bud, posted the paint details above.

I see, so you did the PVA >> Resin step, then made it separate pieces. What did you use to "hold it" together or was if just sheer talent in the build?

Thanks!

Yeah 3-4 PVA, 1 coat of resin inside & out, separate and then 2nd resin coat inside & out ( helmets the only piece so far to resin inside as well) Didn't have too many issues with loosing shape apart from the jaw slightly miss aligned which I used a hair dryer to cure. So probably more luck then talent. HTH

Think it stands me about £400 so far, give or take £100 ;) Think I posted earlier about how much foam mate.

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP)

3-500 pound! Wow that's an investment alright. Your exquisite work shows. Where does that cost all come from though? Paint and the plastic coating?

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP)

This is great! Im in the UK and about to start a mk7 foam build so this has been really inspiring and informative, thanks for sharing. I just hope my build turns out half as tight as yours.

Mainly paint mate, get the primer & clear coat cheap enough but the MerlotRed comes in at £15 a pop:facepalm

Lucky me i guess! i know a place in dublin that sell car paint for 6 euro and are 25% extra per bottle!

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP)

Can I just say that this iron man project is one of the best examples of what can be achieved with a little hard work, skill and patience....As a first time UK builder myself, I feel inspired to make another suit to hopefully improve on my first attempt.... Myself and the entire RPF waits with baited breath for you to finish this stunning piece of art. You sir....are "the man"
