IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP) update pg 10

Re: Iron Man Mk3 Coated Foam (WIP) (Pic Heavy)

********, love that piant job :love Looks so good, and so incredibly RIGHT! You're gonna have one hell of a results with this.

What he said: amazing. Is there any flex to the paint or...?

Re: Iron Man Mk3 Coated Foam (WIP) (Pic Heavy)

Where did you get the 'Toyota Mica/Merlot' red & 'Ford Solar Gold', and did you paint it yourself? How did you do such an awesome job? Any tips for us?

Re: Iron Man Mk3 Coated Foam (WIP) (Pic Heavy)

WOW!!! Thanks all for the great comments guys, it really means a lot:thumbsup

To answer a few questions:

It's 90% pepped.

Don't think there is a brace on the Mk III.

There is a little flex but obviously if you really compressed/stretched it I'm guessing the paint would crack.

Not sure my paint supplier would be much use to you Daborg as I'm in the UK.

Here's the process I use if its any help:
4-5 coats P.V.A ( my foams Plastazote so needs a few coats)
2 coats of the Resin (15 mins apart)
Light rub down with 240 wet n' dry
Coat of Adhesion Promoter
Coat of high build primer
Fill any pinholes ect with Bumper filler
Rub down with 240
Another primer
Rub down with 400
Another primer
Possibly another coat and flat depending on the finish
Flat with 800 used with soapy water
2 coats of colour
Flat with 1200 and soapy water
3 coats of Clear (2nd & 3rd coats heavy)
Leave 24 hrs, flat with 1200 again
Use rubbing compound
And finally polish :confused

Bit long winded I know but at least this explains why the snail pace:cry
Cheers

Thanks buddy, Good luck with the Mk 42:thumbsup

Right RPFers will have update & a couple of pics later but right now I'd like your opinions on a specific issue..........

Here's the thing, having read through almost every Iron Man build thread on here there's quite a few who after building an entire suit they opt to buy rather than build the helmet. Now I am in no way knocking those who have but I was always a little disappointed when I got to the page showing the newly purchased lid.

Well those who read the first part of this thread will know my first helmet came up a bit tight and whilst I'm confident I could build a very good one (albeit slightly bigger ) I'm really tempted to buy a pukka resin one from the Junkyard:wacko

Now apart from being a little hypocritical on my part I just wondered what others thought?? Am I being daft or does anyone else think its a bit of a cop-out buying a helmet???? :confused :confused

Cheers

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP) (Pic Heavy) dilemma pg3

Wow mate, that is a fantastic build. Really clean, and great to see a mark III! The plastic coating looks amazing!

As for the helmet, go with what ever you think. But your first helmet came out great; think I'd be tempted to keep it all my own graft to be honest. :) Either way, keep up the great work buddy, you are killing it! :popcorn

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP) (Pic Heavy) dilemma pg3

how thick is the foam your using if its over 5mm do you helmet and cast it you'll gain 4cm minimum on the outside and should give you more room

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP) (Pic Heavy) dilemma pg3

Just echoing what everybody else has said, amazing work, excellent craft-foamsmanship! :lol

That finish you got is amazing, may have to spend the extra money and smooth cast my build. Wow!

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP) (Pic Heavy) dilemma pg3

mannn i want to see moree.!!!
i really stuned with that plastic coat and the paintjob...i mean is just amazing.! i have been trying to find those kind of materials here in venezuela, but it is kinda difficult...mostly for translations problems to spanish...

i really cant wait to see the Chest or the helmet done.!

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP) (Pic Heavy) dilemma pg3

for effs sake bro!
probably the most cleanest lines, and folds, and valleys, and mending ive ever seen for foam on these boards.
whens mine turn for those skills! :)

edit: and thanks for the tips on the poly 120, i found their store. looks cheap, cant wait to order and try this.

would anyone suggest pepping a helmet from foam, bracing the inside with resin/fiberglass, then plastic coating the outer? then being able to cut the faceplate and making it mechanical moving?

or would a cardstock/resin/fiberglass be an easier approach?

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP) (Pic Heavy) update 19.3

Omg bro this is looking sic man!!! I am blown away at how much like pep this is looking. It's making me think that if I can afford it I might have to give this method a go because no matter how good I make my foam look it just isn't as crisp looking as this.

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP) (Pic Heavy) update 19.3

Just beautiful work there, that plastic coating seems to have come out really nicely

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP) (Pic Heavy) update 19.3
