IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP) update pg 10

Re: Another Iron Man Mk3 first build (WIP)

Wow that suit looks amazing! You dont see too many Mk IIIs being made and this one is so clean! With paint it will be so :love

Re: Another Iron Man Mk3 first build (WIP)

Your lines are amazingly clean and sharp!

Re: Another Iron Man Mk3 first build (WIP)

Thanks again for all the great comments guys :thumbsup

Well reason I haven't updated for a few days is because there's been little progress with the suit :facepalm

But I have made the decision to plastic coat the foam 'xrobots' stylee and my resin arrived yesterday along with a big box of brushes and a delivery from my paint supplier:cool

So going to be starting the whole process tomorrow and will post a load of pics throughout hopefully showing the stunning results (fingers crossed)
Cheers

Re: Another Iron Man Mk3 first build (WIP)

outstanding build thumbs up!
.

Thanks:thumbsup

Ok due to work commitments this is just a small update but a significant one for me. Having taken delivery of the resin I was itching to try out the process, so after applying 3-4 coats of PVA I mixed up the first 20ml of resin and........

It went on beautifully:love
Was really happy with the result and after applying a second coat even more so. Had no problems with delaminating and it sanded well too. Anyway couple of pics of the gauntlet below, the first after a coat of primer and another rubdown and the second (crap pic) after another coat of primer.

Really think this is the way to go with foam builds as this allows you to create a finish (given enough sanding/priming ect) on par with fibreglass/pep builds:thumbsup

Re: Another Iron Man Mk3 first build (WIP)

Oh, that is definately the way to go if you can afford it. Foam can be cheap, that smooth coat isn't. Really nice results though

Re: Another Iron Man Mk3 first build (WIP)

That looks awesome man. What is the resin you used? (sorry if you have said in your thread). It's come out really good. I am assuming its just smooth on but thought you may have found an alternative.

Thanks, I'm hoping to do the whole suit with 2ltr of resin which costs £46, 100 brushes for £20 and a couple of £s for mixing cups etc so all in under £70 GBP which isn't too bad.

Cheers mate, I'm well chuffed with the first impressions and really confident that I can achieve a really high level of finish using this method. The resin I went for is Polytek Easy Flo 120 which seemed ideal for the task due to the viscosity/pot life/demoed time ect. :thumbsup

Its looks so freaking good man, inspires me to finally try and make one

Go for it mate:thumbsup

Oh forgot to mention yesterday that I am using an Adhesion Promotor before applying the first primer coat :confused

Re: Another Iron Man Mk3 first build (WIP)

One of the neatest foam builds i've seen in a long time!
Cheers mate, love your work.

Awesome. .awesome. .awesome!!!!! Subscribed to this!!
Thanks mate

Ok not getting a lot of time to work on the suit but grabbed an hour this morning. Coated the elbow pieces and took a couple of pics, also took a pic of some of the stuff I'm using.

Notice my high tech method of keeping the bits in shape and allowing holding the bits while coating?:lol

First coat on. Usually re-coat 15 mins later to avoid any delamination

After 2 20ml coats, you'll notice that the PolyU doesn't cling to well to the edge but had no problems with cracking although you have to be carefull not to sand through:facepalm

And lastly a pic of some of the materials I use

Re: Another Iron Man Mk3 first build (WIP)

Also just to show the other gauntlet after another flat, should be one more prime/flat and be ready for some colour:cool

Re: Another Iron Man Mk3 first build (WIP)

Okay just a small update. Due to work commitments I'm lucky if I get an hour in the evening to work on the suit:facepalm
Anyway got one of the elbows ready for some colour, not the best piccy' but gives you an idea of the fInish.

Re: Iron Man Mk3 Coated Foam (WIP) (Pic Heavy)

Looks excellent all together, really glad to see you make the resin coating work well. Looking forward to seeing some of the larger pieces coated.

Re: Iron Man Mk3 Coated Foam (WIP) (Pic Heavy)

me too....i am building a MK IV (foam) at the moment and i plan to to seal it with your method...but my concern is that once the plastic has dried the parts won't fit together anymore...

by the way...yout build is totaly awesome!

cheers, Gonzo

Re: Iron Man Mk3 Coated Foam (WIP) (Pic Heavy)
