Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam new pics pg8

This is an inspirational thread. Well done.
Thanks buddy

Oh wow man. You're like a foam magician!! This has got to be one of the best free hand builds I've ever seen! Please keep posting pics.
Cheers pal, 'though most of it is pepped

Hey Shelfside, the chest looks great! Always looking forward to your updates.
Can I ask where you got your uni-beam from? Did you buy it somewhere in the uk or did you scratch build it? Thanks

Thanks mate, the uni-beam was made with a few odds & a bit of poly plastic.

Hi Shelfside, so my foam finally arrived and the helmet is mostly complete. I have to say i'm pretty pleased with it for a first attempt! Do you find the foam holds its shape whilst you apply the easyflo does the pva firm it up a bit? Do you easyflo the inside as well? Looking forward to your next update, i'll start a thread once i've made a bit more progress!
Nice to hear your makng some progress, RE: the helmet the PVA does help a bit but I plastic coated the inside & put 1 coat on the outside before I separated the faceplate and then applied another coat inside & out. Ain't gonna lie I still got a bit of grief getting it all lined up after but a bit of heat can help. Can't wait to see the thread though mate so get it sorted!

Hey, got my 120 off of eBay (ill post a link if ya want) and always watered down the PVA mate.

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam pic heavy (WIP)

Well been laid low with 'Man-Flu' recently but finally got the chest piece painted. Still need to flat the clear coat and weather it but its getting there. Was the most difficult piece so far mainly due to trying to keep it in the correct shape :( Anyway here's a crappy iPhone pic with it all loosely on the mannequin. ( enlarge the pic to see it properly)

So I too originally saw Xrobots technique for plastic coating foam and thought wow that looks great I should try that! Sadly after getting smooth on 65D (for much more money than I hoped to spend as that stuff is expensive as heck), My results were less than those seen in the video. I had issues with peeling the plastic up in sheets and also an extremely rough and at the very least wavy unsmooth finish. I thought I did everything correct, 6 layers of diluted PVA, brush on equal parts A and B of 65D, and yet it came out terrible leaving me trying to sand a mess, peeling sheets or plastic, or looking at the small small sections where it did go on relatively smooth, and seeing the coat was extremely light and also uneven in thickness! I tried doing multiple light layers but even at 3 coats it never seemed to go on evenly to the clean white coat that seemed hard in xrobots video. Your armor is beautiful and obviously it seems like you've mastered the technique so maybe you can tell me what the hell I'm doing wrong? In an effort to get the smooth results I want I resorted to turning the foam into a type of base for a typical pep build (fiberglass inside, bondo outside), but even now its still not the baby smooth I seek. As I have some smooth on left and potentially invigorated by your amazing build and results maybe you can offer some insight as to what I did wrong, and how to do it right??

This is why I think you should do a video of you coating a piece. Even if it's a small part or a scrap of foam. I have had a go and not had the problems I have heard about by others but as you seem to be the best at this technique a quick video would be nice :)

P.S. Loving the build man it looks sweet as!

Amazing work. Hard to make a foam mk3 look movie accurate as the mark 3 has more rounded parts. As far as foam goes, yours is the most accurate I've seen. Good job!!!

I've been following this build for a while now and i have to say that i refuse to believe my own eyes....they see foam at the start and then..."ooh shiny"....i'm not having that, it's gotta be some sort of metal or something....it can't be foam...it's just can't;)

The final pic of a full suit is going to be a work of art
keep up the amazing work mate

I can hardly believe this is foam. If I hadn't seen the original pictures, I'd be certain this was pep/fiberglass. Good choices on the color as well. Love the darker red on the Mk3. Simply and utterly amazing work. Subscribed and eagerly awaiting seeing your completed suit.
I know you said earlier that it was about 90% pep. Whose pep files are you base/start working off of? My plans are to build a Mk3 (Probably my favorite suit) next year, after I finish my Mk7 (Figured it was best to learn/make mistakes/get experience on a different suit before starting on my favorite one).
How much EasyFlo 120 does it take to cover a piece like the chest? Any estimate on how much you'll need for the entire suit?
Keep up the amazing work!!!

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP)

Whoah! Exactly the method I was looking for to start getting a nice finish on my future foam work. Thanks - this thread is going in my "awesome references" folder :)
I'll have to look at the product sheets, see if I can get the resin, or something with similar properties, locally. I love the smoothness, gorgeous work.
