I'm a Bro and I Sew... Who else is with me?

This one's a few years old, but I made the patterns and sewed shirt, vest, belt, bandanna (hand drawn pattern), and boot covers - everything except pants and boots. I had a lot of fun drawing tattoos all over my arms with a sharpie, but I didn't get pics of them.

Hmm, I don't see a build thread on those boot covers. You wouldn't happen to have any pictures with more detail would you? I'm looking at doing some myself and those look pretty nice.

Yes indeed, there are other chaps chained to sewing machines. I sew for myself and make costumes to wear at Sci-fi conventions. I'm working on my fifth Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan uniform at the moment; the second for me; and it's going to be my best yet. Love the Dracula costume. Very sharp tailoring. I have difficulties especially in the pattern making department as I have no training whatsoever but I get by.

I do as well. I wanted at least up to 3 Jedi/ Sith costumes and did not want to spend so much money on bought stuff, I tried myself.

My grey Jedi Tunic, just finished:

And my version of the Ol-Ben-Kenobi on Tatooine Tunic during a con:

For a second I thought you were referring to a "grey Jedi" tunic and I was like Ooo cool! Still, really nice work though. I'm a bit of a sucker for Jedi tunics and robes done in anything other than the standard brown and tan.

In that last picture, who are the two in the middle dressed as? Or are they not in costume?

I love that this thread is still going. And since it's coming up on Con season, we should have a lot of new projects to share!

Great thread! I started sewing when I was a teenager. I've done everything from muppets to auto upholstery. Guys don't need to be initimidated!! Anyone can get started for free (or very little money). Not everyone has an aptitude for it, but there's no risk in trying! The great thing about sewing is that, if you enjoy it, it can provide a lifetime of enjoyment. There is no end to the challenge it presents and the outlet for creativity. When I started I knew nothing about sewing. Don't be intimidated! That's okay! All you've got to know is how to thread the machine, and you're off. Start with some scraps or old clothes and just practice. BUT! On the flip-side - don't jump into sewing because you want a costume you can't afford to buy and you figure you'll save money - YOU WON'T! Start with something simple and work up!

There has already been tons of very fine advice on sewing and the learning thereof. I just wanted to throw my hat in the ring too.

Someone asked me in my Enterprise Tutorial thread (linked in my above post) if I had any formal training or any suggestions for people wanting to learn and sew. Here was my response (edited to fit this forum thread):

I have had no formal training, just lots and lots of practice. Lots of tutorials, lots of experimenting, and lot's of swearing. For beginners I highly recommend these two books (can be found on amazon and other retail locations):

1. Readers Digest: Complete guide to sewing. I personally have an older copy, but an updated one is available.
2. Simplicity's Simply the Best Sewing Book. There is a newer publication, but I am working from the older version.

Get these books, watch YouTube video tutorials, and get some easy patterns to practice on. Make some blankets, some shirts, some PJ's. Work your way up.

i know this is probably way to late in this thread to ask but, i need to make some jack sparrow boots, and i have enough faux swede to do it but very little in the way of a clue of where to start. any help guys n gals?

Hey everyone! I just now came across this thread. I've been sewing costumes for myself for at least the last nine years. I was one of the 'Grandma's working on the sewing machine and I want to watch' type of learners. Then I took a few classes in junior high and high school. I do costumes for myself and friends when we go to some of the 'local cons' and were actually hitting up Dragon Con for the fist time this year (I've got a Once Upon a Time costume in the works for anyone going and interested.) I have an etsy shop where I sell custom cloaks, and I just opened a shop on big cartel. Though i'm far from amazing with my talent, I have noticed that I've got better in the last two years.279346_4000747010298_1346988035_o.jpg
This cloak is probably my favorite piece I have made for a customer (the picture I posted was an in-progress shot because I can't find the finished pictures anywhere on my computer). But i'm glad there is a thread about men who can sew!

Awesome, I can sew I haven`t done anything costume wise. I once made a wrestling belt out of old jeans in the late 80s lol but that's about it.

I was the Tenth Doctor for Halloween. Sewed the suit from scratch with a little help from my girlfriend's mom. I also handpainted all of the pinstripes onto the fabric and the design on the tie, which was far more of an undertaking than the sewing.

Then I made this around Christmas (obviously) out of some really nice velvet because I couldn't find any up to my standards.

It's my goal to eventually make an Assassin's Creed inspired hoodie, I just need time to do it. And I'm going to have to start on my Halloween costume soon, should I opt to be Sub Zero from MK.

I think I need to make a patch for us" Bros who Sew."

The Illustrious Order of Gentleman Costumers

Who wants one?
