I'm a Bro and I Sew... Who else is with me?

So cool to see this thread just did my first sewing !
Thread soon to be posted. It was great fun working out seams and what was inside out and not.
Look forward to doing another project sometime soon.

BROs SEW ON !!!!!

I just finished making the coat for my Connor Kenway cosplay. It's made from scratch using this pattern from deviantArt: http://trujin.deviantart.com/art/AC3-Connor-Coat-Sophisticated-Body-Shape-290200889

Sorry about not having better pics, the lighting in my room wasn't very good. I'll probably be making a thread for the entire costume in a few days if anyone wants to see WIP pics of the coat (or anything I make for it in the future).

That looks awesome, man! I have really wanted to start a Connor costume lately, but I figured I'd better finish up some of my other stuff since the intricate details are going to be CRAZY time consuming. How long did it take you to do the jacket?

I just start off by saying that the myth of sewing is unmanly is straight up BS & I believe men who can sew is a turn-on for women. Anyway, I'm a male & I've been sewing on & off for years, mainly with Lycra/spandex due to a short job experience in sewing sportswear. Right now, I'm back in the sewing game by doing a somewhat small project in creating a suit or two for female friend & I just got my own Singer sewing machine. All I need to get is a zipper foot & ballpoint pins getting starting soon.

It wasn't actually that bad. It took me slightly over a month, but that was because I was taking a spring class at uni at the same time so there were many days toward the end when I couldn't work at all. If I could've dedicated more time each day to it (and if I didn't have to wait for my buttons to arrive) I probably could've finished it in around 4 weeks. The most time consuming parts were probably the buttons and buttonholes, each of which took several days.

Just finished my Browncoat:

I love that this thread exists; everyone here is pretty awesome. I've been sewing for...seven years, now, maybe? Anyway, these are a few of the things I'm proud of, but finished before I joined the RPF and so haven't had an excuse to post.

This is a coat from Fire Emblem I made for a friend (modeled here by a completely different friend who just happened to be around when I finished it)

I made the cloak and jacket for the Dream in this Sandman group (and had to hand-dye a gradient into the flames)

I would have twice as many costumes if I could stop making things for friends who pay me mostly in pizza...but I do have a few. My latest is Wiccan, from the Young Avengers comic. First time making something out of spandex; it was an adventure. When I was wore this to Anime Detour, the guy selling leatherwork in the dealer's room asked "Where do you get something like that?" and when I said I made it, he got all incredulous and said "You made that? Not your mother, or your sister, or your girlfriend?" Nah, man, I make my girlfriend's costumes. She's going to be Batgirl, and it's going to be awesome.

I also embroidered the entire plot of an old Scottish ballad onto the back of a doublet, for some reason. And then I embroidered a million (approximately) silver keys onto a surcoat. I may be the Abhorsen someday...if I can make/acquire a set of matching silver bells of different sizes. But I'm a seamster, not a bellmaker, and for now I'm stumped...

The surcoat ended up the style it is because I miiiight have started it after playing Assassin's Creed for three days straight. Maybe.

If people are still looking for sewing machine recommendations - especially for machines a bit easier to come by than the majestic all-metal beasts of the olden days - I use a Project Runway branded Brother, which was a cheap as a sewing machine gets without being a toy. It isn't nice in the same way the old ones are, but it has plenty of stitches and is surprisingly strong; I got it to punch through leather I couldn't even pin, and it hasn't failed me yet.

Assassin's Creed and Abhorsen in one costume? That, sir, is awesome.

Edit: Not to hijack this thread but I immediately set to searching for handbell sets... they are really hard to find not in goofy colors! All I could come up with is this set that looks great but only has 5 bells (and is a tad pricey): http://www.ebay.com/itm/Set-of-5-An...aultDomain_0&hash=item33911accd1#ht_269wt_918

And this set that has enough bells but you'd have to modify them: http://www.amazon.com/Rhythm-Band-8...F8&qid=1408970373&sr=1-96&keywords=hand+bells

I want to see this costume happen!

Glad you think it's a good idea - sometimes I look at this costume thinking...are there fans? Do people remember these books? Will anybody care? Then I remember that if I get recognized by even one person I'll be pretty fricking happy, because...Abhorsen.

The bells are a problem, though. That five bell set is nice...and expensive. I think they're supposed to be silver, though, from what I remember?

I've been slowly coming to terms with the fact that I don't really need seven bells...I just need seven handles, and maybe one actual bell to take out for pictures. And yet this doesn't actually help me much, because I still have no way to make nice wooden handles, engraved with charter marks and shimmering with magic or otherwise.

I did find somebody on DeviantArt who did it with some of the bells actually being the same size...and just putting them in different sized pouches. I may resort to that, if I don't...magically find a lathe lying around, or something.

(Also, I just checked and apparently some of hers were originally brass, but she painted them silver, and they look pretty nice, so that may end up being an option. I really wish I thought I could paint metal to look like wood, though, because I'm finding more metal-handled silver bells than wooden ones, for some reason.)

(And shhh, it's a secret rule that you can hijack any post to talk about Abhorsen, because Abhorsen doesn't get talked about enough.)

That's a fantastic secret rule!

I just found a few different google results for painting non silver bells to look silver and I know I've seen some convincing faux wood painting tutorials before. I'm sure you could pull it off.

Also, if you ended up going the route of handles with no bells there's this: http://www.caseyswood.com/shoppingcart/zen-cart/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=272_370. It looks like you could get all of the handles you'd need for a couple bucks.

And if we need something showing stitching to prove that we're not too far off I could share this:

It's sewing right? It's Jiro's hat from Black Blood Brothers.

All wonderful projects!

I am making a NEM Captain's jacket in this thread. It's been on hold a few days as I replace my poor old White 4040 that died durring a shoulder point quilting job last week, but the new machine should be arriving today so the thread will be active once again!

Just got into sewing, so far made boot spatz and forearm parts for my Avengers Captain America. Will eventually have a go at a full costume. Building up my confidence and skill on smaller parts first.

Some more of Chuck's usless information... Long time back, only men were tailors, it was considered a man's occupation. Then that changed about the time of the civil war 1861-1865 (and beyond), due to the requirements for large masses of uniforms. One tailor might have 50+ ladies (seamstresses) assigned to him. They did the work, and he had to check each garmet for completeness (et al) before a batch of uniforms could be released. Amounts of 1000 plus uniforms per month were not uncommon orders... for both sides. Unable to keep up, seamstresses were promoted to tailors and picked up the load as it were. Oh and by the by, sewing machines were used on both sides during the conflict, the device having been invented in the middle 1850's...

Regards,
Chuck

I've been sewing for longer than any of my other crafty pursuits. My most recent project is a Captain America style light jacket. It's going to be used for a casual, no-accurate-to-anything-in-particular Cap suit:

I'm not good enough to make something from measurements, but I can tailor things passably well to a live model. I hope to spend more time sewing over the winter, since that keeps me out of the unheated workshop :)

That's a really great first, second, even 10th attempt at spandex. The piping is rockin!

I get that same reaction from people when I say I've made something. I also get treated like I;m lost when I walk into a fabric store. I do however, get a kick out of it when the fabric cutters ask "whatcha makin?" and I answer them...

Hello there. Since this is a "sewing" threats I would like to ask a question DO anyone here know how can I get my hands on a sewing pattern of a Flak Vest?? More specifically the one worn by the UBCS troops in the Resident Evil:Apocalypse movie?? I know for a fact that despite being loosely based on US M69 pattern vest it was a custom made prop since the former don't come in black. Should anyone be able to share the pattern or direct me to where I can find it I would be truly grateful. Below I am giving a link to an actual movie prop I am referring to.
