being a big fan of ilm ever since its creation. ive always loved ilm and always thought they were always at the cutting edge of spfx. with the release of the lord of the rings trilogy (gollum in particular) and now avatar, has ilm finally met its match in weta digital. i think ilm hasnt been as good as when they got rid of their model division (kerner optical). anyone else agree.

First, it's Weta Digital. Not WETA.

Second, it's only a name.

Do you know how many folks at Digi are from ILM? A whole ****ing lot.

It's the people who make the company.

Re: ILM second fiddle 2 WETA

im just saying, i was a huge fan of theirs all of my life. i consider them the "real" heroes of the original trilogy (garbage mattes and all!).

Oh, same here.

I have total respect for anyone who has worked in optical effects.

I would say that Weta has been giving ILM a run for their money the last few years, and in many cases surpassing ILM.
I actually like the fact that Weta still uses miniatures alot more aften than ILM.

Took the words right out of my mouth, Mr. CTF.
Does anybody realize how much back and forth there is with artists and supes at these companies?

exactly - lots of ILMers at WETA Digital.

Besides, these production houses hire for projects all the time. They ramp up for a project, hire like crazy, wind down, and let people go. There's a core group of full-timers, sure. John Knoll is probably not going anywhere anytime soon....

An FX house is only as good as their last show. But some companies have a legacy which they can always rely on to bring them work (and rightfully so).

You can call me Mr. Awesome. Or Babe. Either one is cool with me, Tiger.

Exactly.

There are quite a few veterans of ILM that were instrumental in getting Weta Digi to where it is now: Wes Takahashi and Joe Letteri come to mind.

Dunno, haven't seen it yet, looking forward to it though.

There's nothing special about it. Some of it is just bad, actually.

Don't get me wrong, it's not terrible; but some of it just sticks out (like the stuff from the Stark Expo and the Monaco race).

I think that's because the characters so are engaging; even the worst shots don't seem that bad.

Just so you know, Digi didn't do the aliens in District 9.

There aren't many movies that don't shop out work.

Even the STAR WARS (1977) did so.

Nothing new.
