Ice Cream Maker Guy build in 7 days or less

so....... There is a convention coming up in Baltimore next weekend and I want a new costume. I'm setting to start and finish the entire costume in one week or less.

I figured hey, we've identified all the parts already, mainly thanks to BradleyFett (details here ) and the rest of the costume is pretty standard since it's the base rebel pilot's uniform.

Things which need to be done, according to Mr. Bojangles,
4288-A.jpg

the one other Ice Cream Machine Guy (ICMG) who got approved to the Rebel Legion (RL), there are specs you've got to build your costume to. here is a link to his post on the RL forum, in the costuming section: Rebel Legion :: View topic - ALL READ: New/Unfinished Costume Standards

Here is the requirements:

Ice Cream Maker Guy (Empire Strikes Back)

Required Items:

1. Orange flightsuit with mandarin-style collar and pointed tab, code cylinder pocket on upper left arm, rectangular pocket with a flap closure on upper right arm, and thigh pockets (upper set required, lower set optional). No visible zippers or snaps.
2. Mid-calf black boots (Jack boots or engineer boots are acceptable. No lace up boots. High-Calf boots are acceptable with sufficient blousing of the flighsuit legs.)
3. Old vintage motorized white or light colored ice cream maker.
4. Code cylinders in left shoulder pocket. Two minimum, three maximum.

Formal Requirements:
You must have the following items to be considered formal:

1. Comm pad visible inside comm pad pocket on lower left arm.

Recommended (but not required):

1. Moustache.
2. Sideburns.

So for me...

Flight Suit:
My friend is a seamstress/pattern maker and will be helping with the fabric flight suit. Following the RL forum suggestions, you're supposed to buy worker's coveralls, and sew on the extra details and pockets etc. They also suggest you buy two sets of coveralls, and use the second set as just material to cut the pockets and details from to sew onto the main suit. I didn't know which size to get, so i got 44 regular and 46 regular (chest sizes) so i'll try both on, and whichever doesn't fit will become the scrap material suit for the other. The coveralls are $23.99 each, here

Boots:

bought these

from here

The key prop... the Ice Cream Machine:
bought this auction off ebay. It's the right model, but the top is the wrong color, but I've got left over white spray paint from my TK-5728 build.

Code Cylinders:
so these are made from very specific model dosimeters which are impossible to come by. like 4 years ago someone was selling accurate ones but not anymore. I might do a run of replica dosimeters in the future so that I can have accurate ones for myself, and everyone on the RL boards and 501st forum and i'm sure some folks here still want accurate ones. Currently, the common practice is to use simple cheap chalk holders with the caps painted blue, or to use the wrong model dosimeter, which are plentiful and easy to come by on ebay or where ever. So for this build, I'll be using either regular expedited shipped dosimeters from ebay, or probably just chalk holders for the time being.

Comm pad:
This is a little plastic panel inside the forearm or on the arm of the ICMG and a lot of rebel pilots or something. I haven't looked into it much but I've seen one image. It's just a piece of plastic with paint ed buttons. If I have time, I'll model it up real quick in AutoCad and use the MakerBot

at the Baltimore Node

node_logo_plain_display_small.jpg

to print it, but since it is only a bonus requirement and not in the base costume, I may pass on this for the first phase of this build since I do have a lot to do, and only one week.

Moustache:
got it. I'll just shave off the goatee

Sideburns:
meh, they're growing in a bit. no more shaving there for a week

Soon I'll be able to make my speciatly dessert treat for everyone, Bespin Berry Blast

sweet. I assume you are talking about farpoint. Looking forward to seeing your debute there.

Re: Ice Cream Machine Guy build in 7 days or less

You need Rebel pilot code cyls NOT the docimeter ones. Chalk holders will be inaccurate and would cost you approval in the RL / delay it until you got the right ones lol

You need the ones like these:

XtoolA.jpg

Elvis trooper makes the best ones. Though there are several people making them out there out of various materials.

The first ones I made were with a large carriage bolt and various size washers stacked up if you wanna do it cheaply.

Re: Ice Cream Machine Guy build in 7 days or less

ah so he's got the other kind of cylinders. I was thinking of doing a run of those or of the dosimeter styles sometime in the near future. some pics i've seen recently on therpf show that those code ones are actually wooden and painted silver.

You'd need to get them lathed or machined versus shapeways so they werent pebbly...

and try not take someone elses designs and specs / pictures and use to make them from. just so no one hammers you with recasting. People make them slightly off on purpose so they can tell when someone copies their designs. So try to get your hands on some pictures of the screen used ones. The Rebel Legion stance isnt like the 501st in Recasting, we toss people out for it.

It would be good to have another reasonably priced source for these for sure.

The traveling suit ones seem to be lathed wood, but it may have been a replaced part because they couldnt find the real ones *shrug* we know they put the wrong belt on some pilots in the traveling tour because its what they had on hand to use.

Still think the first ones, at least some, were faucet parts.

Re: Ice Cream Machine Guy build in 7 days or less

of course. in the link i posted they show pics of the wood ones from the movie so, i'll use those. I don't think people are offering wood so i might just do that. I was going to cnc turn them like i did with my inception tops and bishops.

i bought two from elvis to use for me until i make my own later.

Re: Ice Cream Machine Guy build in 7 days or less

Cost breakout:

Flight Suit - $58.13 + whatever i have to pay my seamstress, probably pizza or something
Boots - $91.44
Ice Cream Machine - $34.99
White Spray Paint - $3.99
Elvis troopers cylinders - $26.00
Comm Pad is free
Moustache is free
Sideburns are free

$214.55 plus pizza or something my friend

for those not in a rush, this can be done for under $200 because I paid extra for expedited shipping for the boots... it should be $60 something. if you want to go with a less accurate ice cream maker but still the same style, you can get then for under $20 too. i'd say $180 is doable

i think wood ones would be cool. If you get them to look like the traveling ones I'd buy a set of 3 for sure. :)

You're right on the boots being the most expensive part of this. But you're now well on your way to an x-wing pilot too . yay multi-use items. I've been lucky to run across jackboots on ebay for as low as 20.00, just depends on your shoe size. Sportsmans Guide gets them in a lot too for 40.00, but its weird small or big sizes. :(

Re: Ice Cream Machine Guy build in 7 days or less

yea it wont be an issue. I don't want this thread to turn into an interest thread for a run because it's not in the junkyard and i don't have time to work on it yet

Never noticed this guy either :lol I love it! Especially running around everywhere. Forget pics after this is finished, we require video :)

Re: Ice Cream Machine Guy build in 7 days or less

What they don't show in the movie is he left his wife and kids behind!

Can't wait to see the finished suit!
