I hate NEW Krylon

Hey I know what you mean!!! I got the new Krylon color "Bauhaus Gold" for my Boba ROTJ JP and it just did some weird reactions when applied to the primer. IMO the color looks pretty close (right amount of yellow to orange) but had to strip the whole thing and re do it. Came out pretty good the second time but still happened in a few areas. You really do have to let it sit a good day or so to make sure it dosent react (at least that is from my experience). Cheers!

Thank you for your inquiry with Krylon. Due to Federal VOC restrictions on
solvent based paints, we were forced to change the formula from a lacquer to
an alkyd. Lacquers can be recoated anytime, whereas alkyds need to be
recoated within one hour or after 24 hours. Once the alkyd resin starts
curing, if a new coat is applied over it, wrinkling will likely occur.

The old version is still available through our "Industrial" distribution as
such products are not as regulated as "Consumer" paints are - which is our
line. However, it will not have the new spray nozzle etc. You can find these
products at such suppliers as Grainger or Fastenal.

I always hated krylon. I prefer Plasti-kote paints, available through auto parts stores.

Well at least for me this is good news as Grainger is local and I already have an account with them...
 
Yeah, the new Krylon formula leaves a lot to be desired. You can still get a good finish out of it if you're very (very!) cognizant of your recoat times, but it doesn't take a whole lot to screw it up. Weather plays a big factor too - high humidity will increase the dry time of any alkyd paint to approximately NEVER. Gah.

I learned about this last summer through a model rocketry forum, should have thought to drop in over here and spread the bad news.
 
Figured it was something along those lines.
I am studying to be an Enviromental Geographer/Geologist and let me say it plain and simple......"Yes, the temps are getting warmer and ice caps are melting but it is going to happen REGARDLESS of us painting and building. It is a natural cycle which is the focus of my work. Of course, most people in high places want you to shut up right away....I wonder why??:unsure I do have to say that I am glad they still offer it online, it just sucks cause now you have to wait and pay shipping on paint you SHOULD be able to buy at a store. Glad to see this thread, I thought I was the only one having trouble with it. I to hate the new spray tops as well.
I normally use DupliColor, but for some I just use the other. I also like that our Lowes has started carring real enemals, in clear..Kev

It's gonna be a busy week but I will check my local Sherwin-Williams store, as they were the ONLY ones who had it a few years ago.

I've had problems with Kyrlon Fusion cracking with minimal flex to the FG.

Conversely, DupliColor seems to handle flex okay without any problems.
 
I stopped buying krylon a few years ago I was working on my anh vader dome I gave it a flawless finish then I sprayed the final coat and it destroyed it.It took me over a month to remove the paint.I buy the home depot brand now its way better then krylon.

Bad grammar overload.

I wouldn't mind finding a new paint. Krylon was great for price and ease of use. I loved being able to recoat after 15 minutes.

I've started using the really cheap stuff that Walmart has. It's like .93 a can. I never used it much as I thought, "Oh, this stuff is so cheap it must be crap." So I always used Krylon. Needless to say my Thunderfighter helmet was not happy after this change. Just for giggles I used the ceapest brand, and by God, it works really well!
 
What would be the recommended alternative for semi-flat black from other brands? Is there a rustoleum paint that looks just like it?
