Hunter's prey progress thread--~~UPDATE~~--

Good, I have your attention:
\/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/

It's official, I've started my suit.
Bought a flesh-colored muscle shirt similar to the Mr. Incredible costume and a set of hands that look more like a dinosaur/skeksil claw than pred.

My questions are the following:

1. Has anyone ever used Tulip© brand dimensional paint to paint a fabric suit? I know that I can use it as-is for the black bumps to give a reptilian feel, but would I have to do anything special to color the rest of the suit with it?

2. I've got a 97% chance of getting a ready-to-wear mask W/ dreads for $70, I will then try my hand at sculpting my own bio.

3. The arsenal will be mostly mele weapons, I don't like the idea of carrying an armadillo on my back . Any suggetions on what weapons to make for mele combat?

4. I need a very cheap way of making/aquiring gauntlets, as no predator looks right without them.

5. I'm adding a pic of the ask he's selling so you can tell me what would need to be done to it to get a decent predator*.

This thread will be updated as I pregress, so keep your peepers open.

Thanks for reading, and please help me out on this,
H.P. (no, not Harry Potter)

*note: I'm not going for screen-accurate, just a generic version

For your Pred gauntlets, hit the Thrift/Second Hand stores for toys that can be butchered or altered to fit on your forearm. There are quite a few toys out there that can be modified for forearm gear. Another good, time/money-saving possiblity would be this....

You could add a little bit more to it with above-mentioned toy scrounging. Then just hit 'em with some paint and you would be good to go!!!

You might be able to modify the monster claws if they have the right amount of fingers. Just shorten them a little and give them a fingerless glove to fit into.

Thinned out(about 25%-50% water) acrylic paint would work just fine for painting a fabric body suit. Don't dismiss the idea of spray paint for larger areas, either.

I'll check into the thrift stores around here, as there's always something good.

I'll try to take a pic or two of the claws later and post them up. They have the right number of fingers, just a little chunkier.

I kinda got lucky with paint; theres a place near here that has spraypaint-like dye for fabrics. I'm going to give that a shot.

BTW, does the lair approve of the mask for a beginner?

Thanks for the advice, I'll be sure to use it.

The only approval you need is your own

If you're happy with the your gear (incl your mask), then go for gold!
Personally, I don't see anything wrong with the mask.
Just add some dreads

I agree with fantazar. Everyone's ideas are different on here and everyone's suit shouldnt look the same. Its all in the builder. Great thing about this site is how much you can learn from other people. I myself am gathering materials for a suit. Only person you have to please is yourself. Wish you the best of luck with it

Gee, thanks.

I was just wating to be sure my suit would fit in with the high-quality stuff already here.

How long (ballpark figure) does it take for a pred suit to be finished? I was hoping to ahve it done my Wizard World Chicago, but don't know if I will or not.
Also (if I can finish my suit in time) who is planning on going to WWC? Maybe we can do a group photo.

Well.............I started 3 years ago this year and I still haven't finished one yet, lol!!
It all depends on how much time, money, effort, or determination you have.
Or all of the above
And of course, how good you want your finished suit to come out.

Did I forget anything?

I've been working on mine for about 6 months and I hope to have it done by the time the next AVP movie hits theaters (another 7 months?).

But of course, that isn't 6 months straight work. I only get to work on it on Sundays, and then only for 2 to 4 hours. But it's the ONLY thing I've allowed myself to work on during my free time, all other projects have been put on hold till this is finished.

alrighty, have an update:
I just finished painting the hands. Palm are 50/50 acrylic/water blend, claws/spots are pure acrylic black.

This is my first serious paintjob, so of course there is some slop visible. I will recoat the palms and nails tomorrow.

I was going to borrow a friend's airbrush, but things kept coming up and I had to do it by hand in the end. I got kind of bored toward the end, so put a few black marks on the furthes knuckles, kind of like a tatoo.

Well, I guess you want to see the pics, so here you go:

Please comment and tell me what I did right or wrong. All replies welcome,

might i suggest the palms be kinda the same color as the top, so it blends in a bit better, other than that, it looks good

Well, I got to thinking that they don't need another coat of white, just a few more fine details.
I don't have pics of the new addition, but I basically darkened the joints on the underside with a very light brushing of black paint.
I figure once I get rid of the slop on the tops, I'll give them a nice gloss and make the fingerless gloves out of black fabric on glue them on..

I plan to hopefully start on the upper body tomorrow. I found a tutorial for painting that I plan on using for it, except I need an extra set of hands.

I'll keep everyone posted.

Another update:
The upperbody has been gone over with dark brown paint, the stripes and spots will follow soon.
I am doing this as per Shockwolf's tutorial. The only difference is that mine has forearm muscles, his didn't.
The first image shows the full front of it, the second shows how the colors blended into the suit.
UPPERBODY03.jpg

UPPERBODY02.jpg

I hit a snag with the paint being absorbed by the brush before hitting hte fabric, but I made up for it with a spray bottle similar to the windex kind. you can see it on the table in the first pic
Total paint time I'd plug at about 45 mins. to 1 hr.

I think I'm off to a good start so far. By the end of the week I think I will have most of the skin finished.
Questions, comments, all are welcome.

I AM ON A ROLL THIS WEEK!!!!! :p

The upper body (between neck and waist) is finished!!! Well, as finished as possible in the hobby. lol

I did the spots with Tulip© dimensional paint. The directions said let dry flat 4 hours, I did it in three. Three sections, waiting an hour after each one, so it was done by 1:00

Next item on the list, the legs. I'm going to get to wal*mart whenever possible and get them taken care of and painted up.
The whole time I was painting this, the words "each is different, make this one unique" kept running htrough my mind, so I left off the "tiger-stripes" and did a bit of mid-bicep detailing.

I might/might not make this one look wet, as I think it will give it it's own flair W/O the fancy details. Plus it keeps the final cost down quite a bit, so.....

Comment are welcome,
Hunter's Prey

p.s., I think the trophy room "finished suit" thread just might make 200 by the end of the year.

Woo-hoo!!!
Another thread revival!!!

I found the skeleton feet that shockwolfe's tutorial mentioned.
$6 for a pair and an extra $4 for the nails.

The brown paint is drying on the feet, should have pics as soon as I can get in the garage.
The nails will be put in later today.

Also, the mask should (hoepfully) be here by halloween, so........

Alrighty, the feet are finished (if there's such a thing).

The spots are Tulip dimensional paint, works surprisingly well on rubber.
Feet were paitned with Krylon brand "Leather Brown Gloss" spraypaint.
Nails are plastic costume accessories painte black with acrylic paint and hot glued on.....well, they were taped down then hot glued around the edges. I had to fix one of them since these were taken. It ain't going anywhere.

The whole setup was put over an old pair of sneakers that I was going to throw out but kept for some strange reason....I guess I found a use for them

The mask should be here soon. I'm praying that I'll get my off duty pred done for halloween, but it all depends on the head.

Alrighty, I want to ask a mod or admin to move this into the WIP forum, as it won't be jsut about my skins...... I got a bio.
For anyone that missed the thread on my mask, it's here.

A big thanks to daywalker for making the bio.
The base was a mysteria bio....... I knew that they came slightly small, but I didn't know if this one was the smaller variety or the full-sized......

Look at the pics, as they answer for themselves:

The next one... well, I put on both masks and took a pic. The red outline shows what little visibility I have:

It's a great bio. I plan on workign with it and seeing if I can make it fit better.

If all else fails, I'll use it as a trophy pauldron.... maybe from a bad-blood.

But, yeah.... if someone could move this over to the "overall WIP" forum I'd appreciate it.

Tim
