I am interested in maybe picking up Hadafang as a christmas gift for a buddy. Is United Cutlery's version of it a good one?

Thanks.

The regular UC LOTR swords are very nice and good quality for "display only" pieces. I have quite a few of them and they look great. I do not have Hadafang, but I have heard only good things about it.

Be aware that UC has filed bankruptcy and as a result has lost their LOTR license, so things have gotten a bit crazy with pricing on some of the swords.

I looked into them about a year ago and I thought there was a signifigant change in price ths time 'roud. Thanks for the heads up.

Yikes. Might be the time to snap some of these up.
I always thought they looked great. Sorry to hear about UC.

really?

Actually, that might be good. IF there's any residual market left, it'd be nice to see Windlass or Paul Chen or suchlike pick up the license. If they could get it for cheap, I could see 'em doing a fair number over the long haul.

I've got a few, all "regular" versions and the quality differs for each one. Here' a quick breakdown, takinginto account that these are mainly display pieces.

Hadhafang
Sharp blade. Very solid contruction. Feels like you could use it in a fight- not flimsy at all. Top marks.

Sword of the Witch King
Looks good, but feels slightly cheap, even in the finish. It's evident that it's a rat-tail ("fake") sword. Worth getting but not as good as it could have been.

Anduril
Like Hadhafang, great contstruction. Feels and looks solid with a great finish. Top marks again, perhaps just slightly below Hadhafang.

Gimli's Axe (battle)
One HEAVY sucker... I can barely hold it outstretched with both arms... you wo't believe it until you pick it up. Real solid, nice wood handle. flat/blunt edge and a couple of "easy to construct" parts make it rate slightly lower in the quality department than Anduril, but it's still an impressive piece.

All in all, they are great swords to have on the wall. Overall they look more expensive than they are (or at least were).

Is that why the Anduril LE's are selling at $5,000+ on eBay? I've been wanting to get one, but the pricing is so ridiculous that I might have to wait a couple of months (or years  ) until I can obtain one to replace my $#.tty $50 wallhanger I bought a while back (got cheated in that auction, too late to rant now :( ).

I hope you can find one for your buddy that's at least reasonably priced.

They're very good for the price, I have a fairly large collection that you can see by clicking the link to the Armory below. I didn't hear about UC's money trouble though... that is distressing.

Anyway, if you can put your hands on any of these for a decent price you won't be sorry. I really enjoy mine.

The LOTR line was cancelled all together. UC announced this long before they filed bankruptcy. If you don't have any of it you better get it while its still cheap. I work in there showroom in TN and we've got very little of it left.

I knew that UC were closing down the LOTR line - but I must have missed the memo about them going under :(

The only non-SW replica I have is a UC Anduril with scabbard - it's a fantastic display piece. I've seen many of the other ones in person as a friend of mine has a collection of them - and the other one that really impressed me was Hadhafang.

I was just down there (I'm a Hoosier) this summer. First time I'd ever ben to the Smokey Mountain KNife works. It was very impressive. I ended up walking away with a $35 pocket knife. But I saw he LOTR showroom and I hought there was slim pickins. How long have they been in out of the business?

So does this mean I can sell my knock-offs on Ebay without getting sued?

Hey, this is my first post.

Anyways, about UC - I think it's really too bad that they filed ch. 11. I have almost every one of their LORT pieces. (LE Shards o'Narsil, Narsil, Anduril w/ scabbard, Strider's Ranger w/ scabbard, Glamdring w/ blue scabbard, Sting, White Knives, G. White's Staff, Sarunon's Staff, Gimli's Walking Axe, Witchking, Ringwraith, Hadhafang, Boromir's Sword, and Herugrim.) For display items, these are just fantastic. From what I hear, UC is letting the LOTR contract expire, along with all the other contracts, at the end of the year during this whole bankrupcy issue and go back to only making knives. This means that there is a chance that another company might pick the contract up, but with the (apparent) drop in popularity of the line (as there are no more films to come into theaters) I find the idea that another company will buy the contract less and less hopeful.
In any case, UC's Hadhafang is really a good one, but if you really want it you should get it now... My only complaint is that the display is to set on a tabletop instead of a wall-plaque.

Where can I get some of the swords for cheap (especially the Anduril LE)? Some of the ebay auctions are ridiculous (hey, at least they're not as much as Abion and Filmswords. I nearly passed out when I saw how much their LEs cost ($1,800-$10,000).) with their pricing and the other problem is I don't have enough pocket money to buy even a cheaper auction UC sword :( (which, IMO, is VERY rare). My only gripes about their replicas from what I've seen is making Narsil/Anduril smaller than in the films (52" while the main hero prop from the Elrond giving the sword to Aragorn scene was pushing five feet. The hilt/blade proportion looks wrong to me as well.), Aragorn's ranger sword's handgrip looks rather bland in some non-catalouge pics, and the use of stainless steel (almost every sword guy hates SS, some more than others. I don't mind it much, but I'd love to own a real spring-steel, combat worthy replica of each of the movie swords). I dont know if they are made well enough to swing around (not duelable) without having to be paranoid about the blade falling/flying out; my cheap knockoff Anduril has held up to swinging/light cutting pretty well, but I'm afraid to handle it much anymore due to the fact that my cousin whaked it against a (VERY thick) tree branch and knocked the blade out of alignment with the hilt. It was a piece of crap anyway, I'm hoping to get a nice UC to replace it someday.

Seth

You don't need to worry about swinging them around. They are quality built. Just don't hit anything or you could shatter the blade.

I have idea what you mean about the Anduril being smaller. From what Peter Lyon told us it's the same size as the movie version. I don't know why would want it bigger. That thing is ridiculous as it is.

As far as cost, eBay is a good place. Some online retailers still have some UC LOTR stuff in stock from before it was discontinued. Some distributers still have the stuff.

I don't get why you are surprised that the Anduril LE is so expensive? It's a Limited Edition piece that was limited to like 1000 pieces and hasn't been made for a number of years. Makes sense that the price would go up. especially those lucky enough to get the lower numbered ones.

You can still find the non-limited edition Anduril's on eBay. I know. I looked recently to sompare a price to sell my Anduril.

wow, i had no idea some of these UC swords took off in price like this

i, of course, have the limited edition Sting sword that can be had for about $150 less than i paid for it... :cry

i really wish i would have snagged one of those high elven swords...those are big bucks now too

Hey... Check this out.

LE Anduril

Cheapest one I've seen yet. Too bad I can't afforsd to buy even this cheaper auction.

Can anyone tell me what's the difference between the regular edition and the LE, particularly differences between the swords themselves rather than the certificates? Is the LE like the museum editions (I.E.-- Glamdring and Sting)? If so, why does it have a stainless blade like the regular version? Thanks in advance.
