How to remove signature from MR Communicator back?

UPDATE
Well, I will not have to "Kill Bill", Blufive and I are just going to swap Comm backs, makes it real easy. ;)

I just picked up this MR Communicator, near mint/mint condition with everything included down to the shipping carton for less than original retail from a friend of a friend. One problem, he had the back signed by Shatner when he was here in town, my friend tried to talk him out of it but he had it done anyway.

Now IÂ’m not really a signature collector and I would prefer to not have it there on the back (plus itÂ’s a little worn in the center of the signature) but how to remove it with out damage to the Communicator?

Any thoughts from anyone as to how this can be done safely?

Uhm... why don't you look into trading someone with a com without the signature? I'm sure there might be someone who want's it. Does your friend have a picture of him signing it?

If it was done with a Sharpie type marker then isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) should remove it without damage to the plastic, but I have no idea how it might react to the the MR printing on the back...

Be very carefull of Goof Off or the likes, many of them will soften plastic and play havok with the textured surface...

My first thought was try and use a Magic Eraser... but I have had no experience ith this sort of thing and I have no idea if it will change the look of the textured plastic.

I have tried brake fluid and it has worked wonders for me when stripping paint and ink. The the color on the Communicator is the original color it was cast in and not painted afterwards you could definitely use brake fluid. just brush on a layer, make sure it doesn't run outside the area that needs to be removed, let it soak for 30 minutes then whipe off with a dry cloth, if the signature hasn't removed completely, don't rub, just brush on another layer and wait another 30 minutes. Works wonders and leaves a prestine surface without damaging the plastic or whatever material it is made of. Make sure you check out any risks and disclaimers about usage with the product before using it.

If the Communicator part is painted where the signature is, then DO NOT use brake fluid, since it will strip ALL paint, all the way down to the original layer.

Good luck with removing the signature.

Yeah, I'd go with the try and trade it off, first...

Barring that, I've used lighter fluid with great success for that sort of thing.

Good luck.

I gave that a try and had no takers but I'm still open to that idea, no photo of him signing it.

I figured I would get some input (thanks to all the replys so far) and who knows, maybe someone will see it and be interested in swapping backs. I would rather not "Kill Bill" :lol

A little bestine will take it right off but exercise your options first.

You have quite a valuable piece there.

Well before all this PMmin' started to take place, I was gonna suggest maybe just slappin' down a big ole piece of velcro over the whole back... that ought to cover up the signature, the copyright notice, and that bad ol' call button - and be screen accurate to boot. :lol

Yes, that would have been a fix...for the entire back, sort of a one stop fix. ;)
