How to dull a sharp LOTR Knife???

I have a UC Elven Knife of Strider that I want to make completly dull. I don't want it sharp at all. I also wouldn't mind somehow making the blade shiny like it is in the movie. At the end of the Fellowship movie, when Aragorn says "lets hunt some orc", when he sheathes the knife, you can really see the shine on the blade.

Does anybody know how to dull the blade? And put a shine on it, without destroying it? Maybe buy something from Home Depot that I can put on my drill that will do the job?

Any ideas are much appreciated.

You can use auto polish and a buffing wheel to get the "shine" to it.

As for dulling the blade I and not sure there is a good way to do that beyond grinding the blade to be dull. Its the same tools you use to sharpen the blade but make the edge roundover so its dull.

Proper metalworking SiC paper wrapped on a block of wood will remove the edge, use progressively finer grits to get a smooth finish.

Polish and elbow grease to make the blade shiny.

What is SiC paper?

Do you also suggest a car wax and some type of buffer? Or should I use something else? I use MegalGlo, but I'm talking about giving it a little bit of a mirror type look. To make it more movie accurate.

I would also like to polish up all of the swords too. When you look at Anduril in the movie, and the UC Anduril, there is a big difference with the shine.

Get a large metal file from Home Depot and run it along the edge of the blade in a perpendicular motion. This will take the edge right off of your blade. I did this to a katana's when I was 16, a couple of days after I cut my index finger in half with said katana. :$

Make sure you wear heavy work gloves

That's one reason I want to dull the blade.

Just check out the shine on the prop used Elven Knife of Strider, and the Anduril.

Silicon Carbide paper, its the grey faced stuff used for metal etc. Wet and dry use.

That sounds like the best way so far. I'm going to give that a try this weekend. I want to keep the edge rounded instead of flat (and still look good). I would assume that Home Depot sells it.

Thanks for the great ideas guys....

This works well. Consider placing the blade in a vise, edge up with a piece of thick leather to protect the finish (be careful, if it wasn’t tempered properly it could be brittle and can break if you push too hard or have the vise over-tightened). After removing enough steel that you feel safe, use a finer file and smooth the new ‘edge’ as well as adding a chamfer before rounding off. Be careful not to scratch the blade with the file. A fine-toothed file for finishing will give you a surface safe enough for a child (or actor for that matter).

If you don’t have a bench grinder that you can put a cotton polishing wheel on (I suggest using some form of rouge), I would suggest ‘never-dull’ an impregnated cotton polishing product.

You can also get a rock out of your yard and run it up and down the blade a few times. that worked fine for me on a few swords i bought. Im not responsible for any fingers you may cut off though. lol. good luck :D

UC makes SHARP blades.?.?. I thought they were dulled in the first place.

Just on the knives, not the swords.
