how many different lightsaber blade colours ?

In the movies? Four: blue green red purple (ugh). In the EU? Alllllll the colors of the rainbow! Clone Wars gave us at least a yellow and black, and that's definitely canonical.

thanks for the reply so six are canon
i have read that it was 7 or even 11 canon colours from movies and cartoons so that's why i was curious

Clone Wars and Rebels are both considered canon. Both have also shown a white lightsaber blade (in Clone Wars, it was a lightsaber disguised as a walking cane and in Rebels, it's Ahsoka's two new lightsabers). Also in Clone's Wars, Asoka's off-hand saber blade is lime-green while her main-hand saber is regular green. I don't recall seeing the yellow one though. *shrugs*

Yellow is for the Jedi temple guards.

So that's:

Standard colors:
Blue
Green
Red
Yellow
White

Unique (seen only once each):
Purple
Yellow-green ("as close to yellow as possible while still being green" according to Filoni when talking about Ahsoka's shoto)
Black

Edit: to be clear Ahsoka's yellow-green short saber still counts as green given that, at the time, "yellow" was not an allowable lightsaber color

Do video games count? As for shades of green, we see a lot of variation in blue and red too, but...I say it's still one color. But that's just me.

I always wondered why when they remastered ANH they kept lukes saber cyan and didn't change it to royal blue like in empire.

I'd agree that all shades of a particular color "count" as just one color... I should have noted that in my list. That's seemingly why Ahsoka's short saber was yellow green instead of straight up yellow. At the time it was designed, yellow was not an allowed color -- that still might be the case as it could be reserved for temple guards.

Supposedly all media (except KOTOR) since mid 2014 counts. But I have to think they're not *completely* serious about every little thing from free-to-play iphone games counting, for example.

Of all the remastered effects, the lightsaber ones are the most frustration.

In the original SE they were untouched.

In the first DVD release they were they were re-roto'ed in an attempt to make them better, but instead of using the original elements the went over already finished shots so the end result was mudded and the motion blur was terrible.

In the Blueray release they redid the roto work so they look better-- but the color tints and sounds are all over the place.

All they had to do was tint the ANH sabers to match ESB and Jedi, but noooooo
