How do I make a costume smell like mildew, without actual mildew being involved?

I know this seems like a strange question, but it's an important one. You see I'm creating a costume that is weathered, worn, and painted to look old and dirty. The look of it is very important of course, but I also want the smell to feel right. I want to not only use the look of the costume to make people feel uneasy, but add this smell to make it even more believable. This is being made for in person appearances more than just a film, so I just think this would be an interesting element to add to the costume.

I am wondering if there is an actual mixture of safe to use items that would allow for this to be sprayed on to a costume for this smell effect?

The costume I am making is the Closer monster from the game, Silent Hill 3.

This thing exists in an otherworld of dirt, rust, and general nastiness and I want the look of it, combined with that smell, to really bring it even further to life.

Any suggestions other than laying it in a damp basement and getting real mildew onto it?

Those scent waffers for hunting smell like an old basement to me. You could easily clip those to something.
