How can I get a faux wood grain on resin?

Got my Mal pistol in a while ago (thanks Phil), but haven't had the nerve to go at it yet. I want to have the grips look like wood, not like brown resin that has a wood grain. I've found limited info searching the web, mostly for doors and whatnot.

What's a good way to get it to look like real wood (or a close approximation)?
