Scored the infamous Mattel SONIC BLASTER on ebay about a week and a half ago. I have the air pump handle and it's locking mechanism removed. I'm using an Estes model rocket for the, "rocket" shaped detail piece along the spine. I'll be cutting the bat-fin muzzle details out of 1/8" styrene sheet.
The flared muzzle tip will have to be cut off in order to place the bat fins. The fins could be split down the middle and and attached in a wraparound method, but then I would have the seams to deal with. Any seam from cutting off the muzzle will be hidden by a fin once it has been placed. The barrel tube also has a rail running the length on both top and bottom.
Once you've been up close and personal with the Blaster, you see that it is solidly built and well detailed. There are molded details complete with labeling text like, TEST PORT, SOUND OUTPUT, and VORTEX OUTPUT. There is even a simulated breech with hinge points and a lock lever with labeling. BREECH LOCK , M19-A1-6519, SPEC. 12849.
It's one pretty cool piece of 50 year old plastic from the days when the very sky could darkened by he hail of spring powered toy projectiles! I'm from that time and I managed to survive with both my ears and eyes intact. This will be a cool item to have and show off when finished. So stay tuned here for details, friends. Same bat-time, same bat-channel...!
