Hogwarts in my Home - Gryffindor Common Room in progress

Re: Hogwarts in my Home - Gryffindor Tower Themed Room

I hit the thrift store today and found a lamp that strongly resembles the kind of hooded brass oil lamps on the real set. Perhaps will take the shine down a bit to make it look older, but for five bucks it's a serious score! I tidied up a bit too. ;)

Re: Hogwarts in my Home - Gryffindor Tower Themed Room

I keep forgetting to check in here, because I still can't quite figure out this thread subscription thing.... lol...... but it's looking really great!! I can't wait to see your finished room! :)

Re: Hogwarts in my Home - Gryffindor Tower Themed Room

LOVE this project. Amazing work that you've done so far! I will definitely keep my eyes peeled on this thread.

Re: Hogwarts in my Home - Gryffindor Tower Themed Room

update - I really, really underestimated how long texturing the foam was going to take, but it's beginning to look a lot like Hogwarts!

WOW!!! It's really shaping up! Very very very cool. Can't wait to see it transform even more as the details get filled in.

Re: Hogwarts in my Home - Gryffindor Tower Themed Room

This is looking amazing! Definitely going to sub and follow this build :)

Re: Hogwarts in my Home - Gryffindor Tower Themed Room

This is awesome!!!!!!

I wanted to do a similar thing but as cheap as possible for my apartment. We haven't gone too crazy, but we sort of mixed and matched pieces of Hogwarts but kept it within the Gryffindor color scheme.

I had the same issues with the tapestries! There are some REALLY hi rez copies you can find online, but printing them is a real pain. Check out Amazon for some pretty large Tapestries for only $80(ish) - the one over my couch was about that much. And we also made the fireplace and stone walls ourselves out of pink insulation foam and covered it in FoamCoat from Hotwire foam factory. Pretty amazing stuff!

We still want to make some Stained glass windows for the wall that are backlit, get more tapestries and sculpt a Hogwarts Crest (for starters)

Not to hijack, but here is where ours is at so far:

Can't wait to see more pics!!!!!!!!

Re: Hogwarts in my Home - Gryffindor Tower Themed Room

Oooh very nice!! Yay for kindred spirits! I've been looking around online for weeks to find other gryffindor rooms, but that's probably the best I've seen! :D I'm hoping my foam will look close to that when colour goes on. Do you have progress shots anywhere? Would love to see. How did you manage the portraits?

I'm going to try hand painting at least a few of them. Think I'm going to start with the quidditch painting on the set that's by the gryffindor fireplace. I finally found a fairly clear picture of it to use as a reference. There seem to be a few versions of it, at least two used on set (different frames anyway), a copy at wizarding world, and it seems to be based on a particular concept sketch, so hopefully that will give me enough detail. Here are my references and then the frame I found for it.

Progess in an hour on the Quidditch painting. Harder to replicate than I thought, but should be able to get there.

Yeah!!!!!! Thank you! It's just a crappy apartment with a lot of removable decor to accommodate the constant moving of a 20-something in LA. I think of it like an Indy film set: Make it to take a beating, but can be destroyed or removed quickly with minimal damage.

I love the cozy style of the Common Room beyond reason - it's the perfect level of cozy and pretty much my "dream room."

I have some progress shots of the fireplace on an old hard drive; I'll have to dig them up. I was really meaning to post a seperate thread about it's progress since it took be about 6 months to construct the damn thing. I thought I'd never finish it!

And the paintings I found online and use the "Gel Transfer" method to take them off Laserprinted paper and put them on canvas. The Hook painting was replicated from tons of reference photos, and the rest were just from google and museum archives online.

Tracking down the actual portraits though has been a real bitch! I sprung for the "Portraits of Hogwarts" book that I bought separate from the collection on ebay; paid way too much money, but when I got it I was disappointed that there were no painting from the Gryffindor Common room! Particularly the McGonagle one.

- Also I love your version of that odd Cabinet. I've been wanting to make that in addition to all the other odd stuff!

I'll see if I can dig up pics of the progress soon!

Re: Hogwarts in my Home - Gryffindor Tower Themed Room

I am realizing as I do this that considering the notoriety of the common room, it's quite funny how few officially made replicas actually even belong in there! There's one of the thin stripe gryffindor scarves lying around, and sometimes a sweater or tie hanging over something, a book or two, and candy packages. Pretty much everything else is fairly mundane items or really unique things that have to be made.

You mean this one? I really want to try painting it as well but I have to admit that it looks a wee bit more challenging than the quidditch!

Almost there - just a few more details and going to call this bit done.. Not perfect, but I think it will achieve the look of the original.

That is the one! That looks like a doozie to try to replicate. If I can find some higher quality images from staight on I can do what I did with the hook picture and tile it +add my digital painting to fill in the gaps. I'm not much of a painter, but I'm a hell of a photoshoper!

Ive seen a lot of reference for this, but they're all still really muddy - but I'd love to see you take a crack at it!!!!

And for the Gryffindor wall tapestries here are links to fairly hi res versions:

There are more around there - would be interesting to find a way to print these

Ok so I'm giving the young Minerva McGonagall portrait a go! in the interest of budget, I found a thrift store painting with roughly the same dimensions as the original, primed it and sketched it out. So far so good!
