Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The

Re: [The Hobbit] Bilbo's journal drawing of Orcrist

Thank you :) I could still send you the file on white if you would want to try it out by printing it out and actually aging the paper itself? Could give a nice feel to it, you could roughen the edges somewhat.

Re: [The Hobbit] Three Elven Blades

Very nice work. Any chance you'll be doing anything similar for any of the dwarven weapons in the movie? Or perhaps know someone on the RPF would/is?

Cheers,

Re: [The Hobbit] Three Elven Blades

I have been thinking about doing Balin's Mace. Any more suggestions?
Keep in mind, there has to be as much reference as possible.

Re: [The Hobbit] Three Elven Blades

What about some of the LotR blades like Narsil or Anduril? Or even Sting

Thanks for this. I have been looking for one of these sence i saw the movie. Can you recommend a good paper and a easy ageing prosses?

Re: [The Hobbit] Three Elven Blades

Those look fantastic! I'd love to see one of those with a replica lying on top, kinda like a blueprint and the finished item.

@Obi Wan

The one in my drop box is a Photoshop CS 5 file, if you don't have photoshop try the png files I attached to the original post here.

I'm no prop maker, and haven't put any great thought into any of these techniques or the advantages or disadvantages of them, but this is the way I've aged the paper:

The best start is printing the image out on some nice thick, textured paper, rather than regular printer paper. Then you can use coffee, tea and/or lemon juice to give it that "old paper" colour. You can use a spray bottle, a soft brush or just dip the map in or pour the liquid over it.

One cool trick is sprinkling a few granules of instant coffee which will dissolve into the page when wet and look like spots that sometimes appear on old paper. You can also go around the edges of the page with a lit match or a lighter. Another trick is to put it in the oven (I put it on at 170 degrees Celsius) to make the paper feel stiff and brittle, but you must watch it like a hawk or your map might catch on fire very suddenly.

You'll probably also want to add various folds and tears to make the map looked well used, I think it's best to add these before you age the map with liquid, or as you do it. That way the liquid will create different effects in the creases and tears.

It's a lot of fun to do. There are some nice long discussions on aging in these two threads:

The Hobbit - Bilbo's portrait/sketch - Now includes the prologue pages!

Took a screengrab of the sketch Bilbo found in the Red Book:

Cleaned it up a bit and got this:

Anyone wanna work on it to make it look more accurate? :)

Well if you do a little more searching on the web you can find a better picture like this:

After doing some editing I came up with my own version which I aged and distressed. It goes pretty well with my Red book I got from Indy.

Very cool! Thanks for sharing Stivie! Nice job on the portrait and Bilbo's prologue there.

What kind of paper did you print it on?
