Hero X/Y Wing Questions

I was flicking through the Star Wars Chronicles today and noticed something I had never seen before on Page 110 and 111.

On Page 110 there is a photo showing 3 Y Wings and a number of X-Wings. When I looked closer I found two X-Wings have RED 1 markings on their wings! Without the book in front of me ATM I believe they are the second and fourth one on the table.

Also on Page 111, one Y Wing has a little TIE Fighter silhouette on the nose of it, reminiscent of the kill markings on fighter aircraft (see pic below).

Has anyone noticed these before or am I just slow on the uptake?

Slow on the uptake I'm affraid. The two red ones are one hero and one pyro. As for the kill markings a few models have those.

Re the hero and pyro X-wings mixed together on that table. One thing that hasn't been commented on is that they all look exactly the same length, which I find at odds with the prevalent notion here that pyros are shorter than heroes. I mean, I don't see how that Red 3 pyro at the front is 5mm shorter than the Red 1 hero next to it...

Hard to tell on this pic with the weathering on the nose of red 3 against dykestra shirt. But I am on an I phone and you are the perspective master so maybee your right. We need some perspective lines drawn across the models ie across the noses , canopies etc. And measure the distances. Is the 5 mm just in the noses? I can't remember.

So I took the pic of dykstra and the models and drew the parralel sides of the table back to the vanishing point as best I could.

He lined them all up so neatly in relation to the side of the table that they all could be measured by drawing lines through them to the vanishing point. So I drew a line across the top of the noses. The first two, probably the third look shorter. Then those would be pyros. With the resolution of this pic as good as it gets, this seems to be how they line up.

But the first two includes Red 1 hero. And the third is Red 5 hero, which according to your lines, makes these heroes shorter than the pyros at the other end of the table. Sorry, I don't buy the placement of your lines there. I do agree that the models are lined up very exactly in line, and it only strengthens my idea that one can't call any meaningful differences in length between them.

Keep in mind that none of the Hero had exactly the same length, unlike the pyro which were exactly the same size.

I dont have good ortho pics of the Red Leader so I cant speak for it but there is more than 10 mm between Red 5, Red 2 and Red 3 in lenght, red 2 being of course, the shorter X-Wing (I'm talking about the fuselage length, not counting the shorter exhaust nozzles).

Hi, Julien. I'm aware that Red 2 is shorter than the other heroes, but it's not on the table-top photos. You have ortho photos of the others? Lucky man! Then you're more qualified to speak on diffs in length between those particular heroes. Meanwhile, I swear I can't put much of a hair between Reds 5 and 1 heroes and the Red 3 pyro in those table photos.

I had the Red 3 ortho pics (the famous one) and one Red 5 ortho (nothing of Red 1 sadly), I did some comparisons into Illustrator, and Red 5 and Red 3 were not the same lenght (only by 3 mm or so though). Cant recall which one was longer than the other !

Anyway it would be hard to compare hero/pyro fuselages length from this pic as the wings and engines were not mounted exactly the same and it can affects the overall length !

Lol... well, I'm not going to fight you over this , lol...still, I haven't detected any noticeable diff in wing and engine mounting in the ortho underside shot of red 12 pyro and the red 3 hero ortho for instance, so to my mind the questions's still open... Excuse me now while I go away and waste half the morning staring again at those two pics, lol...

Lol no fight, just discussion ! :D

The wings brackets of the hero are not always at the same position (they can be placed more or less backward) so it can change the overall length, also the engines of the pyro are not the same than the hero ones (the cone that links the engine to the Saturn V can is not the same), I havent done any precise comparison between the hero and pyro about that, that's just eyeballing, so I could be wrong ! :)
