Help with Final Fantasy 13-2 costume

First off I just wanted to say that all of the costumes on this forum are amazing. I was wondering if I could get some help with Lightning's armor in the second part of the video.
If you haven't finished 13 make sure you skip 40 seconds into it.

I really just need help with what material to use. Preferably something easy to use and not too expensive.

You could try foam, I've seen someone do an iron man costume out of tent roll foam sheets, it'll be fairly easy to work with.
