Help with classic Thor helmet...leather wings maybe?

I'm trying to piece together a classic thor helmet (I don't want to she'll out $400 for the collector one). I have a decent metal skull cap to start and it has sheet metal wings attached. They aren't accurate, but would work for a con or costume party. I was considering using leather to make a more accurate pair of wings and then riveting them to a plain metal helmet. Has anyone tried this approach? Also, does anyone now a custom leather worker on here that does commission work like this?
