Help on a Gentlmen sculpture

I have decided to try to sculpt the head of one of The Gentlemen from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This would be my first attempt at doing this and I have really no idea how to get started or what to do. I have looked at air dry clay and have only been able to find a block of 5 pounds. It seems kind of small, but I am not sure how to size it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I hated that show, but LOVED that character design!
First question: are you planning a life-size sculpt, or miniature (scale)? If life-size, you'll want to get a styrofoam head or something to use as a base... this will save you from having to buy a lot of clay! If you use WED clay (water-based), keep in mind you have to constantly spray it with water to keep it moist, or it will dry out & crack before you finish sculpting/molding. If you're doing a miniature bust, Super Sculpey is great; it holds great detail & you bake it in the oven to harden it (available at craft stores). Sandpapermisc mentioned the Monster Makers above; they sell WED clay, and their own clay which feels more wax-based, but excellent for detail.

Second question: do you just want a clay sculpt that self-hardens, or do you plan on making a mold for a mask or a resin casting? A lot of the local craft stores like Michaels has self-hardening clays. Again, use an armature (styrofoam head or even a shaped block of wood), this will make your clay go farther!
