Hey All!
I'm doing a project involving 4x scale models of new types of insect. I need to recreate Moth and Insect Wings, as well as Shiny Beetle Carapace effects..

So far for the moth's wings I'm looking at something like this...

Does that look like it's flat or is it faceted where the vein lines are painted?
I was thinking stretching thin weave (silk?) fabric over a frame, putting epoxy into the fabric.. and maybe dusting with something to create the powdery texture on the wings then airbrush? Or maybe paper instead of silk.. Would probably need to press while drying with a clam shell mold to get ant of the faceted effects.. Also for powdery effects on the wings there's the granular flock.. the stuff that's a finer size than the standard static flock?

Next.. insect Wings.. I wanted to vacuform them to get the texture but may not have access to one.. perhaps a 1 sided mold with a thin layer of clear resin poured over it/ for smaller wings I just scratched vein lines into think plastic but for the larger scale this wouldn't look good.

Finally.. the shiny beetle carapaces you see in some scarab and predatory-type beetles and wasps...

So would the best way to do that be silver leaf and tinted clear coat with maybe a final coat of pearlescence effects paint on top of that?- then you get the metallic, the colour and gloss, and the rainbow hue-changing effect..

Is there ab easier way? Been hard to find that kind of metallic sheen in metallic leafing.

Thanks for the help everyone!

Not sure about the moth wings maybe hand dyed/painted silk might work but you might want to check out some fly tying supply shops. Its been a few years since I tied any flies but I know they made several different types of metallic material used to simulate the look of beetles.

If you are going the casting route, they do make add ons to resin that are iridescent. Check out hobbylobby.com for a decent batch of ideas.

Also, try looking around at various bait shops or places online that let you make your own bait. Quite a few of the worms have iridescent sparkles and finishes, and it's something you can buy and add. A lot of them also sell paint used for the lures as well.

As far as the wings go... no idea at all man. Best of luck though. I'll be keeping an eye on the thread because I kinda wanna thief the idea for a small build I want to do :lol
