I am trying to make a toy shotgun look real for a prop. It is a double barreled one. What can I do to make it look real? First I sanded off the seams and lettering, now I need to know what paint to use? Thanks
Use different blacks for different components of the gun, as if the individual parts were painted at the factory (or different factories) and didn't turn out identical. Not night-and-day different; subtle.
Resist the temptation to use gloss paint. I like Satin black and semi-flat black.
1) Flat Black, let it dry real good.
2) Rub with powdered graphiite
3) Spray with CLEAR MATT (Krylon) Let dry again....
Repeat steps 2 and 3, as desired....then finally...
Rub with Graphite....buff lightly with a cotton cloth...and WALLA!!
Spray matt black, let it dry, then paint/stipple on Z-BRITE (grate polish), let that dry, buff back with a soft cloth, dust some clear laquer on it and then pick out the edges with some silver finger. I like to add small scuff marks and maybe a slight bit of rusting.
