In terms of character, I lean toward Pinhead from the films. In terms of overall, I go back to the lead cenobite in the book. The one eventually known as Pinhead was only mentioned briefly in the book, and the leader was the one later referred to as the "female" in the film, although Kirsty couldn't actually identify its sex. It was much chattier and almost friendly by comparison to the film's Pinhead. But make no mistake, it was going to take her whether she wanted to go or not, so I'd hesitate to call it a "good guy", although unlike Pinhead, it actually kept its bargain with Kirsty, and let her go freely once they had Frank again.
I honestly don't pay much attention to the later films in the series.. they drifted rather far from the source material, starting as early as Hellraiser II. Rumor has it that Barker is working on a direct sequel to the book.
