EDIT- Walrusman finished sculpt pics :)

"this little one's not worth the effort..."

    Hey all,

Finally found the time to sculpt a bit.... started this one last week. It's almost done.

References were pretty scarce on him, so I sorta went more for a "feel" than the detail for detail likeness that I would usually do. Wanted to get that leaning in, sneering look. I'm pretty happy with the sculpt so far. I did try to match the sculpting style that Freeborn's guys used on the blasted side. I've posted some refs too for comparison.

Will likely mold this over the weekend and have a finished bust done in a week or so. Hair and bushy eyebrows will really help his look (IMO).

I'm gonna eventually offer these as latex busts with a glass eye (on his "good eye"), lashes, bushy gray and brown hair and a nicely mottled paint job.

If anyone's interested at all, just drop me a PM :)

    Enjoy.

    Tom

The face only a mother could love :D . Great work Tom. I am convinced that 10-12 years from now, you will have sculpted every creature in the cantina :lol . Do Wuher next, I always liked him, even though he seemed a little surly. Keep up the good work Tom, looking forward to seeing it completed. Bill

You've definitely captured the feel of the character.
That closeup ref image is gross. He should really get that eye looked at by one of his colleagues.

It's funny, when I first started hunting the references on this guy, I was actually surprised by just how ugly he was. :lol

He'll probably look much prettier with hair ;)

Er, um... you know what I mean.

On that topic, I gotta say that hand cleaning is so much easier with WED than with the sulpher-based chavant I used to use.

Sculpting these characters must be an interesting exercise...

    Here's what I mean:

Vicariously through you (and happily so) I've become aware of just how "rough" some of the original work really was. I was AMAZED as a 10-year-old kid when I saw these characters (cantina) on screen, but now as an adult (and compared to today's standards) the original sculpts seem to have "rough edge" to them -- a subtle nuance which you seem to capture magically....

    Well done, my friend.

Thanks so much man. That's such a huge part of the effort I put into these... trying to adopt the style of whoever worked on a piece (be that in sculpting, paint technique, etc.). To me, that's the most interesting part and I'm glad to see that effort noticed :D

Thanks to everyone for the kudos.

    LOL

    "the Wampa" :lol

So I guess PHarchivist answered the "why a cantina head" question, but as to why this guy in particular, I guess the face just grabbed me as something interesting to sculpt. Plus, he's a pretty main character in there and I've never seen anyone do one before.

Actually, that's not true, I did see one other that was pretty good years ago, but that was more of a costume mask than a bust if that makes sense.

I guess the real reason is I thought it'd be fun (and it was... now to finish him.)

I've just done a test pull and am very happy with the detail level in the mold. I'm gonna order the eyes tomorrow, and make a few castings and finish one up early next week.

    Painted up that test bust.

Did this one with the spatter/flecking method using alcohol-thinned acrylic inks over a PAX base and followed that up with some sponging and a HINT of airbrush to bring it all together. I'm very happy with the way he's coming along.

The pull's a little rough because of some clay that was left behind in the mold (ears had some spots which I've patched and there's a bit on the brow of his good eye). Luckily the rough spots will be covered by hair/eyebrows, so it should finish up nicely.

The coloring on the bottom two pics is a bit off... I used no flash and a tungston lamp right on top of the thing so it's a little more yellow than he is in person, but it does show the detailing off pretty well.

Eyes are being custom made as we speak and I'll do the hair in the next couple of days. :D :D :D
