Hasbro NERF M41-A Pulse Rifle

Haha! You must be psychic! Originally, I had the idea that I was going to insert some real bolts in the 'dimples' as added detail. But the more I looked at them in relation to the photos of the original props the more I realised the rifle didn't need such 'extra' hardware. So I've literally, this evening, filled them on both sides! :D

The only thing that's worrying me slightly now is that the grey primer - even though it's a special high-adhesion primer for plastic - is scraping off the orange triggers slightly when the rifle's used. I'm hoping that I can disguise those small areas with a later paint layer or in the weathering perhaps. The good thing about creating a well-used item like the pulse rifle is that the weathering can hide a multitude of sins!
I sensed it!

Thats good to know about the primer too. I may try a plastic adhesion promotor spray before hitting the grey.

Weathering is our greatest ally!!!

wow..the wood looks awesome. What colors and tools did you used for that?
Color?
I can't recall the colors I used to mix up the brown but I went for a slightly darker brown for the base.

Tools?
A paintbrush and a steady hand.
I mixed black into the brown I used for the base color and then hand inscribed the woodgrain so that it wraps about the shape of the grip correctly. After it was all finished, I weathered it heavily (leaving more grime in the recesses of the grip) so that it matched the rest of the blaster.

This is probably a really dumb question, and I'm missing something obvious...is there any way to power off the counter completely, or do I have to take out and replace the batteries every time I want to play with it? When I take the mag out, the counter still reads - -

Does it auto power-down with the mag out after a time?

The counter will automatically shut off after a couple of minutes of not being used.

Thanks.
And for the silver parts where the paint is removed did you used a masking fluid?

Other than masking the shroud from the body, no masking was used.

I primed the body with an acrylic-based flat black because it's tough as nails. It also sits in the recesses of the cage and other metalwork so that I don't have to go back and fill them in with black paint later.

I then added Pewter rub-n-buff over the black in broad areas where I wanted the bear metal to shine through. Once that was done, I hand painted (with a brush) the flat-black paint back over the rub-n-buff areas - leaving areas of shiny metal - and ending the paint so that the exposed areas look like chipped paint

I used lacquer based paint for mine. Automotive spray primer and Tamiya TS synthetic laquers. Give ‘em a few days to cure fully and they’re really tough and resist scraping or scratching. I even painted the magazine and it’s not scratched or scraped at all when inserting or removing. The only places I had adhesion issues was in the but-stock and the breach door. For some reason paint just didn’t want to adhere there. Had to sand repeatedly and then apply multiple light dust coats of primer to get it to really grip.

Thanks for the infos. That looks fantastic! (y)

The email I got said November 1st, too. It really sucks, everyone is getting theirs but us. Patience is a virtue, stupid patience!

The work begins

Not to get anyones hopes up here in the states, but I just received a UPS note on my door that I missed a delivery to night that I needed to sign for. it COULD be the rifles. They will rediliver tomorrow.

Slowly working on the repaint of mine. Shroud masked off and the metal parts first given a couple of coats of satin black, followed by a couple of coats of Alclad II metal laquer (a 50/50 mix of Steel and Stainless Steel, with Polished Aluminum for the interior of the grenade launcher). I'll give the painted parts a coat of Alclad Aqua Gloss tomorrow and then let it cure for a couple of days before giving everything a coat of matt black. The metal parts can then be masked off and the shroud painted (I've plumped for Revell Olive Drab for this).

The plan is then to weather the rifle by using fine wire wool to wear and scratch back through the matt black in certain areas to (hopefully!) partially reveal the steel colour underneath, as well as enhancing the wear further on edges and corners with applied Rub n Buff. Wear on the shroud and magazine will be done with acrylic paint washes and painted 'chipping'.

I hope so, cause maybe that will mean that mine from Gamestop is soon to follow. But, the November 1 date has been floated too, so we'll see.

Well I certainly hope your PR is on the way. I haven't heard anything from hasbro about it but the email did say that nov 1 shipping was approximate so it's possible!

Interesting to see that HasLabs indicates "movie-authentic sounds" while Gamestop indicates "movie-inspired sounds". This promised feature clearly changed during development.

You know, I keep hearing how horribly inaccurate the sounds are. I watched a few videos of some of the unboxings and I thought the firing sounds were pretty darn close. I’m certainly no stranger to Aliens, having watched the movie at least 20 times but I guess you guys are hearing something I’m not.
