Where is the best place to get one as close to the robes in the movie? I've seen Alivans but didn't know if there were better ones somewhere else. Any help is appreciated! :)

Which version? The old ones from the first two or the newer ones that are lined with the house color? I might have a link for you depending on what you want.

Nice threads/references. Sadly though, I'm working on Snape so it looks like I have to build ground up...for the most part. I did find a possible robe to purchase, but it doesn't give a full view of it...so I'm a little hesitant to throw the money at it.
But yeah, looking at all the stuff that's out there robe wise, even if'n I was just doing a student, I think I'd still just sew my own.

I kind of want to make a wand that illuminates since it could easilly be done without making the wand too fat if you're not worried about mass marketting.

I have dealt with this site before for quidditch items. However they also carry house robes. The quality of their costumes are quite good in my experience. I think they are based in Germany, but the prices are fair and I never had problems with shipping to the US.

Not intending to hijack, but what about patterns/modified patterns for the robes (for those of us with access to a sewing machine, but not money)?

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'm still not sure what I'm going to do yet...
If I had any sewing talent I would definitely make my own, but I don't.

The cloak is so easy you really don't need a pattern. Most commerical patterns have the wrong seams. You only need your measurements for height, chest, and arm length. You can use a roll of pattern graph paper to map out the T shape of the cloak and taper the sleeves. The hood is just a half circle. HP robes was the first costume I ever made when I first learn to sew in college. Since then I've gotten much better but I have never had to use a pattern for these robes in all this time. Its really basic in shape. I've made a lot of them when I used to do commissions.

to make a robe, you really don't need any sewing talent at all. I know this isn't a harry potter robe, but this would give you the basic idea of making a robe:

the only difference is the hood, depending on the film, you probably want to come to a point rather than round off and I doubt you'd want the sleeves as large. Other than that the lining is house colored material. But, if you're not even wanting to cut your teeth...looks like some people have already found some good options for yah. Good luck with your search!
