Harry Potter officially passes Star Wars today

So Harry Potter has officially passed Star Wars as the largest grossing film franchise of all time.

Did anyone think it would happen?

Well to be fair. HP had 8 good movies. Star Wars had to make all that money with only three.

Not really, the Star Wars features include the three prequels. So six films, and the re release of the first three in the special editions, I am thinking that is a pretty fair ratio.

I think what he's trying to say is in star wars fans eyes there were only ever 3 movies....

Star wars rules !!!!

To my mind, those movies influenced a lot of films made after....

And I think there is a lot of resemblance between HP and SW...
So, I think JKR owns some $$$ to George...
So, the balance is restored :lol !

I wonder how it would figure with 1977 dollars adjusted to 2011 dollars.

A movie in 77 cost what about a buck. 2011 movies cost 10 bucks.

This just movie ticket sales. I wonder overall, who might be worth more?

And as said before: is it adjusted for 2011 prices? Or cost to profit ratio (ie, how much did they make compared to what they spend?).

I always thought film's should be about butt's in seats - not dollars. Yeah, the 'almighty buck' is the end result, but that number can be misleading.

Harry Potter was a solid film series with 8 films. I enjoyed them - often multiple times in the theater. Sure, some of them were better than others - and at times one of two of them seemed to be a little too mired down.

Star Wars. Well, it's Star Wars. I'm a fan of all 6.

Never thought of that... That is SO TRUE. And as many have said, if it wasn't for the influence of Star Wars, most modern film wouldn't even have been made.

That list isn't adjusted for inflation. It's just the dollar amount each made.

SW also didn't get the benefit of 3D IMAX showings costing 15-25 bucks a pop (prices varies base on geographical lcoation).

That $3 1977 ticket was for night showings. Adult matinee prices were 1-1.50.

Based on tickets sold, i think GWTW wins even with just one movie since it was rereleased over the years tons of times since there was no home market til the 80's.

That's great and all, but there's one thing Harry Potter doesn't have... and that's a Holiday Special!:cool

Yeah, these types of statistics are always lame IMHO. It's comparing apples and oranges. Even if you account for inflation and all the other factors, it'll still never be a completely fair comparison. Besides all of that, it's just irrelevant and fans really shouldn't care.

I like both Star Wars and the Empire Strikes Back and I like the Harry Potter movies too. Star Wars shaped a generation of films after it and likely had some influence on the Harry Potter films just as the Harry Potter films will influence films that come after it. And Star Wars was influenced by stuff before it. It's the circle of life... hakuna mattata and all that.

Exactly- Well, Harry Potter made more money, I don't like Star Wars as much anymore. Maybe I was wrong to be a fan.

Does this really affect people?

The first three Star Wars films adjusted for inflation total over 2.9 billion. All six films total over 4.4 billion domestically.

The Harry Potter movies are around 2.5 billion adjusted, domestic.

Worldwide adjusted figures are not available. However, Harry Potter makes most of it's money outside the U.S. Market. The current HP is making only 33 percent of it's money in the U.S.

The best way to compare is to use tickets sales, but alas, those number are far more difficult to get since the studios use the almighty dollar as THE gauge. Those are the numbers I would like to see.

I think that Harry Potter surpasses Star Wars in not only QUALITY but in just about every other way.

So, can we please drop all this STAR WARS CRAP and move on to other props and costumes.

Seriously, Star Wars is LAME. Pick something good. Like Blade Trinity.

Dollars don't always mean people LOVED it. Look at how badly the Transformers films have gotten bashed and how well they did in dollars.

I'll always love Star Wars more than Potter, but that was my time. I grew up with Star Wars and it's hard to let go of those roots.

Harry Potter also had 3D sales so you have to take that into consideration when talking about higher ticket prices.
