About a month ago I was showing my daughter how to make a prop (fake) book:

The book was a quick-and-dirty build (hence the felt cover) but I liked it. With a little work I thought it would make a very workable Monster Book of Monsters.

I used a Dremel to shape the eyes, brows, gums and teeth (here recently sealed with Modge Podge)

Painted some googly eyes (who doesn't love googly eyes?)

Hunted around on the internet to identify the fonts used for the cover of the book. Scaled and printed the letters and used the print out as a template to create the letters in craft form. Dry brushed the final script to give it the right colors and texture.

...and that's where the project is so far.

Thanks for looking.

More progress....

Looks a little like a Sesame Street muppet ;)

More to come, stay tuned....

I cut holes in the cover to allow the eyes and lettering to seat properly.

Top fur glued on, tweaked to adhere to the tentacles and started laying in the top pieces

The synthetic fur I bought is pretty long -about 2". I've been trimming it down before attaching it to the book but it's still too long. Next steps are to give him a hair cut and to start texturing the fur. The last step will be to add the spikes on the spine.

Thanks for looking.

I've got the exterior of the book done (still need to clean-up the inside cover and add a cover page when you flip the book open).

Cleaned up the binding in preparation for the spines

Created a template for the spine "spikes" -I needed to create a positive and mirror image so I could glue the two together so there is fur on both sides

Spines attached but not yet blended nor has the fur been trimmed back

I re-did the pupils to (hopefully) give him a more menacing look. I think I need to bring the eyelids down a little further so it doesn't look so surprised

Thanks, I'm glad you like it.

The fake book is basically a cardboard box made from a USPS Priority mail box.

Here's a few pics of the inside (note, I airbrushed the inside covers with a combination of black, brown and white to give it a more organic feel)

Awesome. Love when people get creative and use whatever is laying around to make something. Its even cooler now. Did u use clay for the eye brows and gums?

The interior of the book is just about complete. I've sealed the "box" and added liner paper to the inside cover, added a title page and several pages of content.

The last step was blending the printed pages to the larger paper and staining the final pages with coffee.

Pics!

I'm not happy with the eyes and plan to do them again. I also need to airbrush the inside of the spine to better blend the real pages with the binding.

But, getting really close to done ;)

Brilliant work!
Thank you!

My little project is all finished. Eyes have been redone, the inner spine has been airbrushed to better blend the real pages with the fake, and I added a little airbrushed brown to the inside pages.

Lastly, spent a some time taking some better quality pics.

Enjoy (and thanks for following my thread).

This is sooooo cool. I just found this site and am new... I really want to make a monster book for my daughter and found some good ideas
mom Pintrest but yours is much better. I'm crafty but haven't ever tried making a prop. What's the material you use for the base of the eyes and teeth?
i just love this!!!
