Harry Potter Chocolate Frogs...and the perhaps budgetiest vac-former you've ever seen

Two years ago I had the idea of making some Chocolate Frogs from Harry Potter. The main reason I put it on ice was simply that I wanted to be able to make more than just one. It would have been rather easy to get a block of chocolate and carve a frog out of it, but two identical? No way (at least for me :D). Of course there is food safe silicone available, but the frogs were the only thing I wanted to be edible, so the rest of silicone would have just been a waste of money, and after a while, I simply forgot about the project.

Two or three weeks ago, it came back into my mind, and I thought "what about a vacuum-formed mold?", and tadaa, it worked!

they aren't perfect, still need some clean up work around the edges, and they are far away from the frogs you can see in the movie (because I took those frogs available to purchase for reference). I carved the shape out of a block of wax, made a silicone mold of it, made a plaster casting and formed it on my brand new vacuum former :D consisting of a 2x4 cut and screwed into a rectangular, a ventilation grille, a heat gun and an old shop vac that's probably as old as I am, but hey, it worked.

I'm not sure I understand why you didn't use the food safe silicone for a flexible mold that you pour chocolate into directly. There are tons of examples online of homemade and commercial silicone candy molds. What exactly was going to be wasted and how does only the frog needing to be the only thing edible matter? I'm confused.

thanks guys!

What exactly was going to be wasted...

Money :D

It's a very little form (as I said, I made a silicone mold of my wax master, which took me about 0.2lbs of silicone), and since I'm from Germany (and wasn't able to find any retailers here who sale food safe silicone). I would have had to buy on the internet. No problem with that so far, but Smooth Ons smallest pack of food safe silicone is 2.2lbs for 35$ (plus shipping, which to Germany isn't cheap, I guess)

... and how does only the frog needing to be the only thing edible matter?

As the frog was the only thing I wanted to have edible castings of, I would have had to buy 2lbs only to use 0.2lbs, which means most of it would be wasted (at least in terms of money) as I wouldn't have any use for it.

I know that Smooth On isn't the only company, and there are probably smaller packs available from other companies, but it was such a small amount of rubber that I tried something else instead.

Ahhhh, I understand now. I was confused that you were using silicone, but I see now that it wasn't the food safe version. Nice work on the vacuum forming.

When you said budget vac-former, you meant it!

Looks like you got quite a nice pull from the forms though.
