Harrison Ford 3D sculpt - Deckard (Blade Runner) - v2.0

UPDATE: Sorry for the long wait, but life gets in the way. I finally got my printer working properly again - I needed a new feeder tube and had some temperature settings causing clogging. And temperatures dropped enough outside so that I could run my printer without worrying about the extra heat and power usage, since my a/c had been running pretty much non-stop.

I printed it out around the size I originally envisioned. It's 140mm from the top of the head down to the bottom collar flaps, so about 5.5", but really it's about 5" tall, minus the flaps hanging down. I printed in two pieces to cut down on print time (less supports needed). It took around 8 hours for the top half, 6.5 or so for the bottom I think;

20210904_031130.jpg 20210904_135644.jpg 20210904_160554.jpg 20210904_160642.jpg 20210904_161325.jpg 20210904_161246.jpg

I didn't do any clean up yet, just sanded the two faces to be glued and stuck it together. There's some spots where the 3D model was too thin to print properly, and the bottom of his right ear had an issue printing, but I expected sone of that, and should be able to fix it without reprinting. But I'll try to fix the model for furure prints.

I used the 0.4mm nozzle, as I was having problems with the higher detail 0.2mm one. I may attempt using the 0.2mm again, but it doubles the print time, so when a print fails, it's especially frustrating.

UPDATE: Go big or go home!

Instead of finishing the last print, I decided to re-print at a higher quality. I printed the one pictured in my last post at a lower detail level because I had been having problems with my printer, and I didn't want it to fail on a lengthy print. Plus, I'm impatient, so I always want things printed as fast as possible.

But since I was re-printing, I tried to fix a few things with the model - areas too thin to print correctly, plus exaggerating some details (like his chin scars & mole) so that they'd print better. I also increased the scale of the print, so you can see more detail.

I kept having one of the supports fail and fall over, so I tried the tree support option in Cura. It worked better, but it was a lot bigger than it really needed to be. Probably needs some settings tweaking.

All three sizes of the prints I've done, the new ones obviously have just been sanded and fillied at this point. The newest is about 7" - 7.5" tall. I printed in two pieces again, to decrease the need for supports and infill. The top portion had supports but zero infill while the bottom (printed upside down partly so both parts would have a smooth surface to join) had 5% infill but no supports.

After primer - I just used Krylon:

I'm currently in the 2nd round of sanding, plus I'm sculpting back in some of the details that were too fine to be printed. Not really "sculpting" so much as just using an X-acto knife and small files to get some more depth and fine lines where needed. Hopefully I'll have more updates soon. I'm also trying to model a base for it, still thinking of ideas.

Sand, fill, primer, repeat:

In order to get rid of the print layer lines, I sanded and also used Vallejo plastic putty to fill some of the deeper ones so that I wouldn't sand away too much material and detail.

I tried to add in some extra details again, a few creases, wrinkles, and some refinement of the hair. It's hard to see, especially after priming again, but it helps.

I filled some low spots and sanded/filled some high spots. Brought back his slight chin cleft. Started putting some color down, using Vallejo acrylics for miniatures and models, my first time using their product. They advertise no brush marks, self-leveling paint, and had good reviews, so I thought it'd work well for my purposes. So far, it's been pretty good. I started with the "flesh" color straight from the bottle (c'mon Vallejo, it's 2021, not all flesh is this color, but I digress). It came out too orange, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to have a darker base coat. Plus, I'd need multiple coats to cover the primer anyway.

Lightening it up, plus added some slight dark washes and such. Got a little too light, it still needs more red tone, but I'm getting a better idea of things.

Painting the eyes white has made me realize some problems with the 3D model in that area. The inner corners of the eye, near the nose, are set too far back. Also, the eyeballs may be a little too small. I kept changing the size and position of the eyeballs and corners and caruncle, but I didn't realize how pronounced the problem was until seeing it in actual 3D IRL. I'm planning on fixing the 3D model, but I think I can use putty to fix the print for now.

Making progress (I hope). Filled in around the eyes with putty. I'm thinking some of the issues there had more to do with the print process than my original 3D model, like maybe there were areas to thin to print properly.

It's hard to get accurate colors in these pics, but I tried to get them as close as how I see them IRL. Some are in incandescent light, some natural.

Still a ways to go, but I think it's getting there. The eyebrows are still too pronounced, I've been trying different things but haven't quite figured it out yet.

Another quick update:

20211005_223715.jpg 20211005_223730.jpg

And for fun, I played around with some filters and made this grainy, black & white pic:

It's actually helpful to see it in black & white - it lets me see the tonal values a bit better, like with the lips and eyebrows. And taking progress pictures in general helps me see details I don't always notice.

More progress, getting closer. I redid the eyes - I wasn't happy with the position and shape of the irises. I also made the whites less white, more natural. I may try to make the eyes glossy, for a little more realism. I had the idea to use clear gloss nail polish, but I want to do a test first.

20211012_141952.jpg 20211012_142508.jpg

The hair got some touch-up work around the hairline, plus a dark wash followed by a lighter brown dry-brushing. Plus some other tweaks here and there. And I finally got some paint on the trench coat and shirt & tie. Both are just flat, single colors at the moment. I'm still deciding which shirt from the movie to try to recreate, and how to do the details. I don't want it to look sloppy, and all the shirts have very geometric, detailed patterns that will be challenging to paint.

I'm feeling pretty good about where I am on this right now!

Looks great. The only thing I would change is the colour of the lips. Looks too much like lipstick. The rest is fantastic. Good job.

Thanks, the lips actually don't look that bright in real life. I still may adjust it, but here's a pic in different lighting, no adjustment to the color of the lips was made.

I did the shirt like the one shown here:

I had to simplify the details, but I tried to get it as close as possible. Started by laying out the background grid (again, simplified).

After some dark wash to take down the brightness:

Another dark wash to dim the colors (left side):

And after adding the "stitching":

Small-ish update: first layer of paint on the sport jacket lapels, added a dark wash to the trench coat, dry brushed the hair lighter, and changed the color of the lips. Still trying to get the right lip color. And different lighting can completely change how it looks, so it's been hard to get it just right.

20211013_205246.jpg

Still left to do: paint the tie, dry brush the trench coat a little lighter, dark wash for the lapels (and maybe a dry brushing after) and more work on the lips and hair. I might gloss coat the eyes - my test using clear gloss nail polish is in progress. And I plan on making a 3D printed base. I started working on one in Blender a couple weeks ago but I haven't done anything since, and I'm already re-thinking what I did. But I've got some ideas on what I think will work.

UPDATE: I might be done here. I'll check it again in the natural light of day, but I'm feeling like I've got it as close as I can get.

20211025_202453.jpg 20211025_202400.jpg

Lighting here is pretty dim and warmer in tone, the natural daylight will be much cooler, so I'll see how it looks in comparison tomorrow.

Some changes from the last update:
- Completely repainted the lips. I used a lot more colors, so it's less of a solid tone than before.
- Redid the eyes again. They still looked a bit "beady" and I added more putty to the right eye (Deckard's left) because it was still too flat. It looked good at certain angles, but bad at others. Now it's more consistent.
- Painted the tie.
- Darkened the shirt with a black wash.
- Lightened the sort coat lapels.
- Dry brushed the trench coat to make it lighter and slightly greenish.
- Adjusted hairline and added a black wash to entire hair.

If everything looks good tomorrow, I'll spray it with a clear matte coat of paint to seal it and take down the glossiness. I still want to try gloss coating the eyes. My tests with clear gloss nail polish went well, but it can smear the acrylic paint. I think the matte clear coat will keep that from happening, though I'll test it to make sure.
I'm still figuring out a base, so it still won't quite be done until that's printed and painted as well, but it won't take nearly as long.

UPDATE: Matte finish and glossy eyes

Quick comparison after I was (almost) finished painting. I sprayed it all with Krylon Matte Finish clear coat, then used regular superglue on the eyes to give them the right sheen. I looked into gloss coat paints, but I wasn't confident enough in anything I saw in stores or online. Hopefully, the cyanoacrylate will hold up over time. Even though I wanted this paint job to look good, I'm still using this piece as a learning tool for future versions and projects. I had a little problem with the superglue getting on the skin under the eyes, which I fixed later, along with a few other fixes.

Before the images in my last post, I went in a redid (yet again) the eyes. I still wasn't happy with the depth and shape of the right side eye, so I filled in with more putty and repainted. I also felt the right side temple was too concave, so I filled and painted that too (seen here before the "glossy eye" update).
I'm making note of all the filling and changes so I can adjust the 3D model for any future prints.

UPDATE (PIC HEAVY): Final paint job of what I'm calling v1.0!

As I said previously, after thinking I was finished and spraying the Krylon Matte Finish over everything, I made a few small-ish fixes to the paint, notably the lips, some areas of the hair, and some color issues to make things more even. Here's pics from some different angles and lighting conditions:
