HalloweenCostumes.com "Back to the Future 2 Light Up Shoes"

I had an interesting chat with quality control at HC about the powerlace spacings and how it affects fit and feel.

Basically the width of the laces horizontally across the tongue should be about 1.2 inches or so. My laces went down to .9 inches at the slimmest. When they are sewed thinner, the shoe feels tighter. I checked this over two pairs. I urged them to get the manufacturer to regulate the spacings on the laces better, here's hoping. In the meantime, the head of QC said he would pull random shoes and check the spacing and pull some aside with good lace-spacing.

The size US8, US9, and US10 shoes are all 4 1/4 inch across the widest part of the toe so sizing up does not make them wider. At least not those sizes.

And some random tidbits:

The shoes are covered in white-thread stitching. I asked them to switch to gray-thread, and they stated they were already kicking around this idea. If more people ask we can at least get shoes with less-visible stitching.

I suggested a black version. They seemed receptive to the suggestion. Maybe more people need to ask about this too.

The shoe orders should be caught up and the shoes in-stock for immediate shipping by April or so, so you don't have to pre-order and wait.

If I heard the numbers right, they sell about 7000+ of these shoes a month with a return rate of only 2%.

In my opinion I think the "pre-order" is a way for them to dodge the discount coupons that they offer. When the first batch of Mags came out, I was able to get them using a 15% off coupon. Fast forward to the second release, I ordered my second pair, only this time I had a 20% off code but for some reason the site was not letting me use it. When I called them they told me that coupon codes were not accepted for items that were on "pre-order." Even if they have a warehouse full of them, they will keep the pre-order in order to charge the full price.

Thats is my theory.

I think they are being honest about the shoes simply being very popular and they can't keep them in stock. It's 2015, etc. People want them.

The guy was very open about shipment sizes, when they are getting shipments, and when he expected them to be in-stock regularly. In fact he said these things unsolicited, I didn't even ask.

And, IMO, the full price is fair enough. Take those codes and get one of the future jackets or a hat or something. I'd buy one of the future Doc Brown outfits, so my taller friend can go as Doc.

Scroll down to the longish post containing lots of instructions. It lists the sole yellowing fixes.

There is no permanent fix. Well, outside of replacing the sole I guess.

I've dabbled in "sea glow" with Air Legends Sole Sauce to take the yellowing, actually dirt brown, out from my 2001 Columbia Jordan XI's. I kept a second pair in it's box up until last year and had no idea it would turn dirt brown over time. I highly recommend everyone to store their shoes with ziploc bags and put those silica packs with them to keep them from yellowing anymore. That goes for the V2's and definitely the RD's. For a 14 year old shoe (the 2001 Columbia Jordan XI) it took me 2 months back to back every 12 hours, cleaning off and reapplying the Sole Sauce.

Instead of placing it outside using the UV rays from the sun, I got a UV B Bulb from a local Pet Store for reptiles and placed them in a box with foil to bounce the light around the shoes like this.

So it made an improvement on the Jordans, how does it go on the MAGs? As mentioned, this is a band-aid fix as the yellowing goes right through the cross-section and the only way to fix that is replace the soles completely.

Put together a light up strap with some ELs I bought (not Mark's kit). What do you guys think?

Awesome. I think you need to now slim that toe :cool

Did you capture the photo in landscape or portrait? There must be metadata attached to the file that tells which way the image was originally captured. Facebook does this all the time, though you can edit to rotate later on.

how much did i cost to make it this wy compred to marks kit? mind posting what parts to buy?
Just shop around until you find the stuff a price you're ok with. The parts are the regular stuff - EL panel w/ inverter of your choice. I made this way because I didn't want to solder together Mark's kit.

Looks good. Those the parts I showed you?

Also, is that green or aqua EL?
Thank you and yes. The EL behind the Nike is blue to match the blue LEDs of the HC Mags.

mind sending me a link to the blue el and how did you do this without soldering?

Mine arrived today.

Already got MPs buckle kit and am waiting on the decals coming

Will be adding the mods to a list of other things to do :)

So the glow in the dark tape came and it's garbage it barley lights up and only lat a few minutes so that was a waste of 6 bucks idk whether to grab marks decal kit and be done with the shoe for a whole or to work on the trap lighting what do you guys think? Shoes with decals or shoes with no decals and a strap light? I don't plan on using these until comic com this year so I have a few months I guess I just don't know what I should do first so far I've slimmed toed the shoes/ moved the on button from the heel to the inner side of the shoes/ re did the soles the correct color grey and did a better splatter and I'm working on getting the soles to have the curved sides instead of just flat the way cavx did his pair before he started making the clear soles.

Tape color is nice and smooth, but not bright enough. Glow Inc products are the way to go in the US, if you really want glow-in-the-dark.

I don't even know if I'm gonna make mine NIKE MAGS. I might do something else.

Maybe make a custom shoe with the HC, and save up for the V2 (or the possibly upcoming airair shoe) and make that the accurate shoe.

If someone understands the limits and accepts them, then GITD works great.

What does the light look like dead-on? Can you still make out the blue tube inside the cavity? What diffusion material?

I'm sure it does but I want to be able to turn the lights on and off whenever I want rather than have to charge the and only see the when it's dark enough anyways here's a before and after shot head on you can't see the led strip anymore you only get a small hot spot in some photos now but in person they look great I used some of this translucent foam stuff that was in a package I got you could probabley find it in a post office I'm not home but I'll post a picture of the material when I can

I considered buying some 365nm UV LED's and associated supplies to experiment with on/off GITD. But after finding out the EL upgrade won't be that much for me, I decided to look into that or LED upgrades instead.
