HAL 9000 with Charging Dock

Hi All,

I have been working on a Hal 9000 replica, and began to see the level of detail that other members gave their ones. I didn't want to clog up the other threads so I made my own. So, I began to revise me build quite a bit. After purchasing a Mobius kit, I realised that the kit on its own is only just adequate. So, the lens rings and the speaker grill were the only original parts I used.

I also wanted a charging dock for all my android devices. Which, believe it or not, I can't find anywhere to purchase. That is, a dock to charge my tablet. phone, smart watch, ear buds etc. If you are an Apple fan there are any amount of docks that cover all these devices but not Android. So, this build was about incorporating Hal as a decorative item to the dock and make the unit look more like a console of sorts.
I will keep updating and posting pics of the build. I have got much inspiration and ideas from various members on this great forum, so thanks guys.

John

Here are pics I posted before of some of the lens varations I went through. The Mobius kit had a much taller curve toward my glass lens. Although the glass lens looked better. I took apart an old projector, and tried different lenses from that too. But in the end I bought a much better one from eBay.

The first pic is my own glass lens, a fisheye lens belonging to my camcorder. The second pic is the reproduction Hal lens I bought from eBay

The lens from eBay is far superior, and I bought a simple sound module, that plays each individual file each time you press the button.

I put a USB hub inside the charging dock i made from wood, and ran LEDs all around the bottom and back to serve as a nice night light option when it's all assembled. Also added a sound bar with ports for Aux in & USB stick inputs for all different media sources.

Looking good!

It is indeed difficult to get a lens that approximates the original Nikon lens primary element. It's rare to find one that a) bulges out so much, b) is of the correct diameter, and c) has the spherical curvature inside.

Thank you sir!
The eBay lens was a great buy, the pics below are from the auction. A very tight fit into the housing but I couldn't be happier.

I pulled a speaker out if an old pc to upgrade the one on the module. I had to pair away the re-enforced pillers on the back of the grill to fit in in neatly. Sounds way better.

Very nice build and that glow is the right color inside the lens. Eager to see your next update!!
Thanks sir. The ebay lens has made all the difference, with a white led and red film. The bigger speaker was surprisingly better too. I will keep you updated, thanks for the encouragement.
