Green Lantern: First Flight -- Power Ring Defined Thread! *56K WARNING!*

As some of you may be aware, this July 21st, DC's next direct-to-DVD animated film will be released. Green Lantern: First Flight will be the first film EVER made about the Emerald Crusader! :cool

Starring Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: SVU) as Hal Jordan, Victor Garber (Alias) as Sinestro, Michael Madsen (Kill Bill) as Kilowog, and Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica) as Boodika, the film looks to be really good! Thanks to the folks at Yahoo Movies, you can now watch the trailer for the upcoming film HERE.

Since this is, of course, a prop forum, and since we have some people here that like to make prop replicas of the various versions of the GL power rings, I've started this thread to help people figure out the design of the power ring from the new animated film!

I've taken several screen captures from the trailer in full 1080p high def, showing the ring off from as many angles as possible. Here they are:

Looks pretty neat! One thing that's different and cool is that the lantern-shaped symbol is recessed down into the face of the ring, as opposed to the design we typically see, where the recessed area is the area surrounding the lantern-shaped logo.

And since it's clearly shown that the ring's glow comes from the center of the ring, that makes it a perfect candidate for an LED light-up ring prop! If anyone decides to make such a prop, remember that I wear a size 10 ring! ;)

Still unknown is what the power battery (the "green lantern" itself) looks like. As soon as any footage is shown of that "prop", I can post screen captures of that as well, if anyone's interested. :cool

Great set, I have that one too! I got it when it first came out! :cool:thumbsup

BUT... that set illustrates exactly what I was talking about. Compare your "Hal Jordan" power ring from that set to the HD images above. Look at the 2 rings side-by-side and it will be easier to spot the differences. ;)

Yea that is definitely not the same ring.

It looks like they were going for more of a high tech device look with this movie.

Good point. I also think the added detail was done to make the "prop" look better in High Definition. The movie's coming out on Blu-Ray, so people will definitely be able to enjoy it in full 1080p High Def! :cool:thumbsup

They've changing a few other things such as Hal's white gloves and a more armored looking costume.

On a side note, I'm looking forward to this.

I don't know, those rings look horrible. I like the idea of having a different color ring for each corps. But when they look really really bad, come in a crappy lego inspired mechanical looking ......thing, with a $250 price tag I really want to pass.

I'm sure within a year someone will recast the corps logos and place them on better shaped signet rings or something.

I like GL and everything, but I'm not a fan of this new style ring. Hal Jordan had the best looking ring to start with, and this looks a little like those digitiser things from the anime Digimon. Plus those little divots either side of the ring would be a hassle to sculpt.

Still, I'm a fanboy and can be rather forgiving.

I have to say I liked the original signet ring GL ring a little better than this one. I do not really understand why DC decided to change the look so much.

I was just messing around with the jewelry cad program at work. I'm not really a Green Lantern fan, but was looking for something to do while I waited for a client to make up their mind on a engagement ring, :lol

Not exactly accurate but like I said it was quick

Ditto. They just look cheesy to me. Also I think actual Lego would make a better display.

Lets hope that day comes soon. :)

As far as the new ring style - I'm not really digging it. It does look better in 3d model above though(great job Utinni) Maybe when I see one made I'll change my mind but until then...it's classic Hal all the way.

Problem with that machine is it leaves a fine cross-hatch pattern. For our jewelry we use an invision tech machine that gives a smooth mirrored finish. No matter how slow the resin printers go, they always tend to have the textured surface.

I like the design on this ring. True I still like the original Hal Jordon ring better, but it's still not a bad design.

I always thought it was a shame that the different Green Lanterns didn't have their own individual ring designs. All of them having the GL symbol, but each having their own individual look. Would work well if for fallen Lanterns and the bad guy has their drained ring. Another Lantern could tell which ring it was just by looking at it and not having their ring do some type of scan or something.

Of course I would love to see someone do this version as well.

I just hope after "Darkest Night" that we return to 2-3 Corps tops....

I hate this multi-colored Corps concept. It was better when we had just a Green Lantern Corps and Sinestro Corps.

I could live with a Star Sapphire Legion, too, even though that's highly revisionist. Geoff Johns can be just as bad a as a lot of writers today in that he changes history and retcons things when it's convenient instead of addressing things a bit more honestly. But seriously, my main problem with a lot of his writing is the gratuitous violence and gore that permeates a lot of his story arcs. I haven't cared for the killings and have been seriously been peeved by a lot of them since Infinite Crisis which I know happened partly with the okay of the DC editors... Hopefully, some of the deceased characters will be returning to the land of the living after "Darkest Night." I miss the original Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, the real Firestorm, the Ted Kord Blue Beetle, and the Earth-2/original Superman. The DC Universe is a darker, coldere without these characters.

FYI, my favorite ring designs are the Hal Jordan traditional GL ring, the Golden Age Alan Scott train lantern-style ring, and the revised Sinestro Corps ring.

I do hope that Alan Scott is somehow worked into the GL storylines a bit more than he has been. His powers are just a bit too much like the primary Corps for coincidence, magic-based or not, to be ignored. I wonder why he hasn't been addressed a bit more by the GL books since their revivals since he is Earth's first known GL, official Corps member or not. Confining this Green Lantern to just token appearances and JSA doesn't seem right to me.

My favorite GL is still Hal Jordan although I'm okay with all the human GL's since the characters as a whole have been better since Rebirth. DC wasted a lot of time with this "Kyle's the only REAL GL" business and a lost a good 10 years of prime story potential with that single-minded obsession...

Wow I dont know how I missed this. Finally they give Hal Jordan his due and Sinestro looks damn good too
