Green Goblin Costume/Cosplay

Greetings all. Thought I would upload and share the journey I have been on recently to update and create a newer fresh version of my own take on the Green Goblin that i made for the weekend at Comic Con.

Left 2017 VS Right 2016.

We will start with the point of inspiration, the 2016 costume I did. I had an old Goblin mask I had sculpted for a kids Halloween show, and my decision to go in 2016 was last minute. I had one evening to put together a costume. So i changed the colour of the mask and dyed the canvas esq materials i had in the house. I wasn't happy with the rushed look and so this year I wanted to do a more finished version.

I didn't like the sculpt of the old mask from the front, it seemed a bit off, a bit squiffy.

So what i did was take an alginate cast of the old design, and poured liquid plastiline into it. As there were elements I did like in the original sculpt. From there i placed the clay copy onto my sculpting form. Here i started to work out the problem areas, one being the nose. The Goblin the last mask was based on was more Brian Froud esq, Whilst I liked the hooked nose on that Goblin I began to feel it wasn't "Green Goblin" enough.

I looked at the nose the Green Goblin had and adjusted it to be more stocky, also made the chin jut out more. I am currently working on a small sculpt of my company's logo mascot and the ears from the Imp chap inspired the ears for this Goblin. I also decided to remove the boils and give it more course, rough skin in certain ares.

Here is the old sculpt in comparison to the newer sculpt. I think it's about 2 years in difference.

From there, once the sculpt was complete I made a two part Herculite Plaster mould as the mask would be cast in Latex.
I then seamed the mask and poured in some soft prop foam J-162 into areas such as the nose/chin and ears to help prevent them from distorting.

I also sculpted some Goblin Skin patches that i would be attaching to a green lycra suit.

These were also moulded in Herculite as again they would be run in Latex.

I sculpted some textured eye blanks, as I have real trouble back painting eye blanks. These would be my base to paint on.

End of Part One.

The costume was inspired by a few designs. In a Halloween show I did a few years back we had creature characters that had torn clothing draped over them. I really liked the torn look I had created for them, and felt that the Goblin would have torn clothing from fights. The second inspiration was the figure from Sideshow collectables. The use of a patterned fabric in the hat and the tunic was something I hadn't seen before. On the old costume i had wanted to make the stitching obvious, but seeing as it was last min only had string. Here I also wanted to retain that from the first design, but instead used a plastic looking leather thong.. I also had chance to add the missing eyelet holes i didn't hace time to add to the last one. I had also seen a few versions of the Goblin with goggles. This to me made sense as he probably would have them when flying on his small winged craft. Sadly I didn't get time to create that but I will be making on to go along with my cosplay for next time. I stripped the old hat down and simply recovered it due to time constraints. I also had an old pair of heeled boots i covered. The boots had panel forms already there so I simply kept these and highlighted them by utilising different shades of purple.

Then it was onto painting the mask, and the skin patches on the suit.

I left the teeth off for this version as I didn't want to frighten too many kids, but willbe adding them this week so will post an amended pic at a later date.

And here it is all finished. I did do some gauntlets for it but they ended up a bit battered so will be redoing them and will post a shiny pic of them at a later date too.

Overall I was happy with how it came out. There are a few things I will be tweaking as i just ran out of time for the comic con. The eyes i will re-paint, the flying machine I will make, will make more pumpkin bombs that actually light up, make the goggles lens colour stand out more, redo the gauntlets and maybe add some subtle armour plates on the shoulders/thighs.

I will post these updates once I do them. Thanks for checking out the Goblin.

I like some of the upgrades you've done, but I feel the earlier costume captured the essence of the Marvel Green Goblin better. I personally would love to see the new mask with the hues of the first costume.
I can't wait to see where you take this next.

I did like the earlier costume too for its simple nature and more comic like feel. It was more the mask i didn't like. I also wanted to do something a bit different for this time around. I still have the old one and I was thinking the other day about repairing it/refining it a little bit. The new one I tried to more of an artistic spin on rather than a direct copy. But it would be interesting to see the new mask with the older costume now :) I'll post some pics of that when i repair it.

Thank you. He's a great character to do. Fab for creating a replica of some great original concepts, and great to create your own interpretation too :) Would love to see your Green Goblin. Not many people in the comic cons I've been too have cosplayed him. would love to do a Goblin meet up of all the different types :)

This is how I envisioned the Green Goblin to look in my fan film I was planning a while back. Bravo on the execution, looks crazy good. I would expect him to look like this in the MCU if they ever decide to use him again. I hope so, and do him justice.

Eventhough I have a different view on what the Green Goblin should look like,I admire the amount of work you put into it and how it turned out :thumbsup it really looks professional

I have two more costumes that I am planning on making alongside his missing flyer. I will be revamping slightly/fixing the first costume to obtain a more comic book feel and i also had an idea of making a more armour plated one. With some Goblin esq shoulder armour, chest piece and knee guards for a slightly different look once again.

I'll probably start his flyer in the next 2-3 weeks so will just upload all the build pics here. That will be based on 1-2 designs i've seen so will be closer to that seen in the comics.
