Greaser Nightwing build

Been on this site for awhile but this is My first thread WOO. Im from Australia & In november we have a convention called Supanova and iv decided to go one of the days as Greaser Nightwing based on denis medri's concept art. So far I have bought the varsity jacket, gloves, boots, and pants but I may end up changing the colour of the pants. I bought brown cargo pants but keep going back and forth with brown and army green. Thoughts?
Still need to buy a belt, im thinking a khaki type colour with pouches, but finding it kind of difficult to find a decent design for the pouches. Anyway I dont want my first post to be too long winded. Hope you enjoy my WIP 'build'

Cool concept! I vote the brown pants. Brown is a more neutral color, so it the Nightwing colors will stand out more. As for the belt, my recommendation is army surplus stores (online or actual shops). You can probably find a decent desert-camo utility belt there.

Thanks mate. Yea thats what I was thinking and why I went with the brown pants. The jacket came today but I didnt get a chance to go down to my parents place to pick it up. Iv also ordered custom embroidered patches of the N & W for the front of the jacket and the nightwing logo for the back.

These are the parts of the costume iv got so far now its just playing the waiting game for them to arrive

So I started on the mask today. I decided to give it some shape so it fits on my face properly and not just fabric that will scrunch up and not sit right. Then ill spray it with some adhesive and lay the farbric over the top and hopefully it looks good.
I bought some 2mm foamies and 2 masquerade masks. I cut about a 3" strip of foamie then heated it up with a heat gun, but you can also use an oven on a low heat, then when the foamie was soft I placed it on the inside of one of the maskes while pressing it down with the other mask to get the shape until it cools and then draw and cut out my design. I went through 2 designs before I settled on my 3rd and final version.

And here is the mask completed20141014_165228_LLS.jpg

Also received my boots today so I couldnt resist getting suited up. Still need to attach the letters and logo when they come and get a belt and do the racoon eyes, looks weird without it20141014_164509.jpg

Nice job on the mask! And actually, I don't think the lack of eyeshadow/racoon eyes is hurting you due to the overall style of this costume. It strikes me as the same type of style as the recently redone Batgirl costume: these were all things Dick Grayson could make/procure on his own. I think the racoon eye effect may look out of place. You already have dark eyes going for you. I would see what it looks like sans-makeup once you have the whole costume completed, then with just dark eyeliner, then with racoon eyes, and see which one looks most natural with the rest of the costume.

Cheers for the kind words mate. Ill definitely be testing with and without racoon eyes and eye liner. Iv never worn makeup so ill have to learn haha. Also its summer so ill need to look for one that is water/sweat proof so it doesnt run

A lot of eyeliners are waterproof, but you can also look into the eye black that athletes sometimes use - it hopefully shouldn't sweat off. If you go the eyeliner route, you will need to get some makeup remover - just water won't cut it if you get good waterproof stuff, and you don't want to be scrubbing at your eyes with soap!

There's some good info here if you want more suggestions: http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=224875

I can't wait to see it finished! I love Nightwing. :)

Awesome info Yrien. Ill look into it more and become an expert on eye makeup hahaha.
Hope I can do nightwing justice

Thanks for the kind words.
Ok so iv been looking online and cant find a tan belt with pouches. I can find plenty of black or olive drab belts. Do you think the black or olive belt would still match the outfit? Id love to stay as true to the artwork as possible but my chances of getting a tan belt with pouches is looking slim to none unless I buy the belt and pouches separately which will cost too much.

Tactical belts are typically that thick. If you take a ruler and hold it up to your waist, 2" really isn't that huge, especially where a tactical belt is concerned. The belt in your concept photo looks to be on the thicker side. It will probably be too wide to fit through the belt loops, but that's fine, it should still sit on you correctly.

If you've done that and you still think you want something else, you might try Strapworks. You can build a custom belt there, choosing the type of nylon, the width, and what kind of buckle you want. Granted, You'll still have to make the pouches to make it look tactical.

I think iv decided to go the build my own belt route. Did some searching and pretty much know which belt and pouches ill get

Small victory, I just bought the belt and 4 pouches. The pouches are for phones which will be useful cause I dont want to carry a bag around too. I went with the 2" belt as suggested.

I bought the top left pouch Screenshot_2014-10-16-11-14-34-1.png

Pretty close match to colour I think.

Just got an email from the person doing my embroidered patches and she said she didnt realize that I was located in australia, and now wants me to pay more for shipping. when I sent the paypal invoice i took a screenshot which had my address on there and she said she received the payment so she looked at it at the very least. Im just wondering if its fair on me that I have to pay more now because she didn't realize where I lived?

Bit of an update on my build finally after waiting for parts to arrive. Still waiting on my belt and pouches but I made a start on painting the collar cuffs and waist blue 20141104_131400.jpg ill go back over it all once its dry and touch up any white parts.

Also received my patches and very happy with how they turned out 20141104_132714_Richtone(HDR).jpg ill iron the patches on after iv painted the jacket.

Hope to receive the belt and pouches this week or next week
