GQ Vox with Real plasma disk!!

Behold my Galaxy Quest interstellar Vox with real Plasma disk.
based on Red shirts very fine kit.
I had decided years ago that it was possible to fit a battery operated plasma disk in a screen used (for size) vox prop but nothing came close to the quality that red shirt promised so I waited until his kit was released and it was worth the wait.most vox lits I had seen were a bit too small ,I attributed this to mold and part shrinkage as the vox shown on screen seemed to be large enough to me .the hardest part of this whole project was grinding the disk down to the size I could fit into the upper half of the casting both the casting and glass disk had to be altered.I went through three disks to get one to work they are very fragile and most of the problems were in the area where the electrodes came out of the disk in the rear these were easily broken while sanding the thing down on the belt sander ,grinding took two hours apiece.
and then the damned thing wouldn't work.:cry
buy the time I had test fitted everything and was now on the third disk I had most of the difficulties worked out so it went together quite well. I also bought a few reed switches from american science so It would activate like the movie prop, took that idea from redshirts built up which I bought also.
Cant say enough about this fine kit wish it was around two years ago I could have saved some money.:)
so here ya go ...on with the pix.

Awesome! Great to know it can be done!

Any more tips on how to do it? Where'd you get the discs?

I picked up the first disk on ebay and then found them at spencers gifts.
you can get them in white or with a blue hue I went with the blue.
and I cant seem to get my movie camera to down load yet so photos will have to do for now.

Re: GQ Vox with Real plasma disk!!

That's really cool!!! Great job fitting the disc into the shell. I purchased one of Redshirts deluxe kits but I would love to have an actual plasma disc in it like yours.

Unfortunately, I didn't see any small plasma discs in the local Spencers...they were all the larger 12" size. ANyone know if there are any online sources where I could buy a few discs?

Do a web search for "pocket plasma clip-on". I don't know if those are the same ones mr.predicta used, but they are something like 2.75-3.0 in diameter, battery powered and can be had in blue. Prices vary, but it looks like they can be found at least as low as $19.95.

UN-REAL! That couldn't have turned out more ridiculously awesome.

I wish I had more hands, so I could give that Vox 4 thumbs-up.

:thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup

Did you need to use any of the deluxe aspects of redshirt's vox or would the standard be enough to do this with?

I used one of his standard kits you only have to add the plasma and a reed switch also it helps to relocate a few of the cast in magnets.

If you two will work together I think we could have the DEFINITIVE GQ VOX Kit!
Great work! (to both);)

A video and some instructions could help others do the same.

Unfortunately I didnt do a step by step photo log since I do not have a lot of time to devote to my own projects usually Im working on my stuff while doing other work and cant take the time to document everything. It is just a lot of drilling plastic and grinding glass
as you can see from the photos I had to add about 1/8th extra to the profile of the vox to accommodate the larger electronics I added this to each separate segment so it would appear even in it distribution ,a little bit to the top ,the banding and then to the lower half.
but when its in your hand you cant see any difference!
Oh and it has the voice activated option intact so it reacts to noise!
how cool is that?

Wasn't quite ready to release this but since you guys brought it up, I have a source for a custom plasma 2.375" disk that should be a perfect fit into the kit without having to cut/expand parts and grinding the Plasma disk down (as in the 2.75" Pocket Plasma Disk). Determining costs - might add an extra $50 or so above the Deluxe price if the parts work.

The plasma disk would probably be molded right into the Vox body for a professional finish.

It would be sold as the Vox "FX" version.

It's still under review with the shop.
