Gorram Sidkit Mal Gun !

So I have the infamous Sidkit Mal gun and I've had some troubles with the little thumb piece that's supposed to move up and down.

(the piece directly in front of Mal's thumb knuckle)

So does anyone know where I can get a replacement piece that is perhaps not so crappy or have another solution?

Mine came with two of these pieces funny enough, but both were damaged or warped. I've had it for a year but I'm finally tired of dealing with its crappyness !

Moony !

I like the fact that it moves. And yes the safety. It'd honestly work great if it wasn't a cheap piece of crap. is there any other source for this piece ?

Sadly the original maker has passed away.
I hate to say "piece of crap" to describe the Sidkit Mal pistol.
It was what it was, which is to say a cottage industry soft metal casting.

Your options to repair the lever are determined by what tools and materials you have.
At the least, you'd need drills and taps to re-thread the shaft.
If you can make a replacement shaft out of better material in a lathe,
you could screw it to the back of the lever and pass it through the pistol body like the original.

I looked at my build thread here,
SerenityMovie.net :: View topic - Firefly/Serenity Weapons Collection
but I don't really have much useful info on the safety lever.

Perhaps if you post a picture and list what skills/materials tools you have to work with, a better solution could be suggested.

Good Luck,
Mike

Thanks Mike - will do. And sorry to hear the original maker passed. You never really think about those things when buying stuff online.

And for the record I wouldn't describe the whole thing as crap - just that gorram warped safety. My tools are also limited. I have no lathe or anything fancy to work with also. My prop building tools ranges from rocks to hammers to chewing gum.

Man, I HATE having to use rocks to fix things.
I never seem to have the right size...

Still, if you can post a picture, that might help.
I may even have a spare, myself.
Problem is, the lever isn't really meant to move.
There is no detent or spring loading.
It was mostly meant as a clamp to hold the two side plates on.
No matter what the lever is made of,
at some point moving it will wear the soft side plates which will make it loose and floppy.

The Sidkit Mal is a good display piece for some occasional handling.
It isn't up for use as a holster gun or a lot of play/handling.
The metal used to cast it is less durable than some of the plastics out there.

There is reason to believe that QMx is developing a Firefly version, metal Mal pistol.
The person who developed the Model 47 and the 47A would be the person behind it.
The 47A was done "at cost" with a price of $800 to $900,
so any QMx effort is likely to end up in the $1,500-plus range.
For them as can afford it, that will be the top of the Mal pistol line.
