I found this place a long time ago on an Adam Savage podcast. He's always making awesome costumes and going to SDCC, and said he's gotten lots of help from this forum. So I checked it out and was instantly hooked. I loved lurking and watching people create amazing pieces, and now I have the itch to do it myself. It's going to be my first ever costume, so I decided to pick something relatively simple.
I'm going with Jorah Mormont from the Game of Thrones television show. He's always been one of my favorite characters in the books, and Ian Glenn just nails the role. Anyway, this right here is my ultimate end goal:
I'm going to do the armor with foam mats, and then plasti-dip spray them, sand, paint and weather. It's just 6 pieces, and they have no fancy embellishments. Just plain steel. But before I even buy the foam and the plasti-dip and the sandpaper, I'm aiming for this:
That way, even if I mess up the armor really bad, I can fall back on that outfit.
I've searched all over the internet for those pieces, then realized I could probably make them myself for a lot less money and end up with it the way I want it to look. So I started searching for sewing patterns, and realized I'm not sure what I'm looking for. I found shirts similar to the one he's wearing by searching things like "mens medieval fancy shirt", etc. But as for that "skirt", I'm totally lost. I tried searching riding skirt, half gambeson, mens kilts and a bunch more, but for the life of me couldn't find a suitable pattern, nor even a name for that item.
Then, I decided to come here. If someone could drop some medieval fashion knowledge on me, I'd highly appreciate it.
I think the only thing I'm gonna have trouble with are the boots. I really don't want to spend 60 bucks on a pair of riding boots that I won't wear more than 5 times a year. Luckily I have a ton of second-hand/Goodwill shops in my area, so hopefully I'll find something.
So, if anyone could try and help me with the proper names of both the shirt and kilt, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks!
