That was what I eyeballed it to be too and what I had started my 3D model at.
I happened to have a 10cm splittable bauble from when I made the Guardians of the Galaxy orb and it seemed a bit too small for the Dark orb but the 14cm seemed too big, 12cm seems ideal.

Yes the benefit of Fusion and 3D modelling is the ability to scale.
 
Finished the large cylinders and got them in place. Just need the knobs modeled and added.

Ran into a VERY disappointing design flaw of this prop that most of us anticipated; the cylinders collide inside of the sphere.

This leads me to only one solution, which is to NOT add all of the removable cylinders. This is extremely disappointing, but I was prepared from the beginning to deal with this issue. Moving forward, I will have the small dials turnable, the particle chamber removable, and the two halves rotating. I MIGHT add one or two of the removable cylinders because I've already modeled them, but at this point that would just be a bonus.
 
Amazing work you have done so far !! I'm also building the sphere since season 3 ended to help with the emptiness

.I've to say that your work on the cylinders patterns is really helpful, so really thank you!! I didn't start from the aesthetic point of view, i went more for the "i don't know how to fit 7 cylinders in a 10cm sphere" point of view and i've been working on a collapsible way to fit at least 4 cylinders. I had to sacrifice the particle chamber, so i'm happy to see you prioritizing it!!
 
I really wanted to have the cylinders come out like in the show, but it's just not possible. Sucks, but I think it'll be okay. Post yours!
 
I do think that a rotating center with functional fuel drawer is pretty much perfect for my ideal of this prop. The spinning cylinders is not the coolest aspect to me, this is like having a lightsaber hilt. Part of the fun is knowing the cylinders are inside. As someone else mentioned, you could possibly have them magnetically attach, but I think it's just awesome as you have it envisioned right now.
 
I don't know how willing you are to sacrifice accuracy for functionality...but perhaps it would be possible to have the cylinders extend while saving space inside the sphere by utilizing nested, slightly-tapered segments? Like, the same general concept as the cheap toy lightsabers?

I think what I'm going to do is have the cylinders separate and attachable via magnets for display.
 
Finally finished all of the knobs and cylinder details. Next step is to split the orb and start modeling the turning function. My small SLA printer should be here tomorrow, so I'm hoping I'll be printing test orbs this weekend. Preorders will open shortly thereafter!

I originally wanted to model in the seam where the two halves rotate, but I won't know for sure until I get the cylinders modeled in; I'm predicting they get in the way of having a sturdy center axis, if at all. The lighting is also a possibility, but I've never wired electronics before, so it will most likely only have the moving cylinders and particle chamber. Time will tell!

Nice! Been wanting to make one of those things myself! I agree with others that having the ability to have the halves rotate and align is key to this prop. That's literally the signature move when anyone uses it in S3. Given that the cylinders pop out after that I'd for sure look for ways to have ones closer to the parting line just "shorter" or only pop out a little. You still should be able to have one or two come out all the way I think.
Thoughts on materials for the real build?

I'm going to be resin printing them for the detail, at least for the initial print. I'm considering casting the orb itself in regular resin, and printing the dials and cylinders for the run.
 
Looking amazing!! If you're planning to cast the main body (rather than 3D print it multiple times) how would you feel about doing cold-cast brass?

I've considered that. My only concern would be not being able to match the cast with paint. I might attempt casting all of the pieces [emoji2369]
