Gold paint

Ok, so I've been out of the loop so to speak for awhile now...it's been a long time since I've been involved in the prop replicating hobby, after getting into bullwhip making for awhile, and now into video special effects...but I've been itching to tackle making my own replica of the Ark of the Covenant...no matter how long it might take me to do so....but my question here is what would be the best gold metallic paint to use once I do finish it, if I ever even get it started, that is? Just something I'd like to know well in advance...hoping there is something out there that would give me a good, shiney finish, and not something too dull and listless..otherwise what's the point of making one in the first place?

Sorry can't help with the paint as I'm in the same boat I'm looking for a good rattle can gold for the Indy Idol, when I get one.

Watching with great interest.

I'm nearing the end of my odyssey with this piece:

After a LOT of research, a process called "Cosmichrome" was the best bang for my buck. The company that did my work was called Creations N Chrome in Valencia, CA. Thy do a lot of automotive stuff, but are cool with working on props as well.

You may want to check out this link. We're building an Ark kit.

Creations N Chrome gave me a quote of $3,000 to finish an ark.

One of our guys has a quote from a metalizer in L.A. who can do the Ark for $1,500 maybe.

The best Gold spray paint still looks like Spray paint. The best one I've seen is one called Montana Gold Chrome and as good as it looks it still looks like spray paint and as I understand it it can't be handled much.

"Much" is an understatement. It's been about 8 months since I painted my Indy idol and I still can't really touch it. It looks like crap, too. If Montana really is the best than paint isn't an option.

However, I've seen some test plates in person done with Killer Chrome and it does look very good. To get the chrome kit with gold candy coat it'll cost you close to $300 though.

I'm sorry... but that gold on that helmet just looks like that plastic chrome you find on toys. Doesn't have that metallic look or feel.

Unfortunately, many paint process give this effect. I read that it's the same process used in toys factories.

Spaz Styx have a new product: gold mirror chrom paint.

If it's like the mirro chrome paint, the final effect if really awesome (espeially on smooth surface painted with an ultra black gloss paint).
Unfortunately, it's really fragile and you can't cover it with varnish (maybe a water based varnish).

I was so frustrated with the paint I decided to Gold leaf my Idol. I'm real happy with it and it feels and looks like a Golden Idol would feel.

You can see it here:

With my coming Blue Five Idol I'm gonna take Droidboy's idea and just throw it in with the Ark when I get it metalized

Perhaps I should clarify. This is a replica of an existing item, and this is the finish that the "hero" helmet has.

Well, you replicated the look, but it still looks like that plastic chrome to me and would look odd on an idol or ark of the covenant, imo.

Fair enough, just giving options. There are other colors it comes in as well, if the tinting is the issue. I know the guys there have said that a lot of people don't like the yellow chrome, saying it looks "like a bowling trophy"

This was an earlier version that came out more of a reddish-copper gold:
