Ghosts & Busters: Supernatural Victims Unit

Hey guys! I'm starting up a new webseries, and because the subject matter is DEFINITELY right up this place's alley, I thought I'd post updates about it here. This series is a parody of Law & Order and Ghostbusters, and we've shot an entire Season of the show, which will be posted weekly on Fridays.

The show follows a special team of Paranormal Detectives who are called in to investigate events that leave behind victims of Supernatural crimes. Season 1: "Fantasy" Follows the team as they get into the swing of their new assignment and try to get along with each other long enough to stop a Vampire cashing in on the "True Blood" and "Twilight" crazes sweeping the country. Preying on easily manipulated fans of the series, the Vampire has already claimed victims, and the SVU team must find a way to prove his involvement before another girl loses her life.

Hope you guys like it!

You know that makes a lot of sense. How better to hide in plain sight then create a craze that has tons of people dressing up as vampires and make them appealing instead of the truth.

Exactly. The first season of the show is a big poke at that the "teddy bear Vampire/Werewolf" genre popping up lately. It will show what would REALLY happen if some easily-manipulated girl tried to DATE a Vampire, haha.

hi there :)
i just watched the first episode, and i like the idea. Alltho i will give you some tips to improve (dont get me wrong, i like what you are doing, but hey, everyone can improve :) )

a few things you could easily improve without to much money. I will advise you some DIY methods to do this, so you get the best out of your money :)

1) lights. It was really hard watching this on my projector, because its so dark. now i know a professional light rig cost a lot of money, but it can be achieved otherwhise:
you know those lights?

they are perfect for low budget filmmaking. Ok sure you need some modification for light color because you cant just put a ctb on top of the light, as it will probably melt. You will need some stands for your light and also some blinds built, but hey, this is a prop forum, and this can be done with less than 10 dollars :) on top of that you can attach a ctb to get your night light (CTB-Color temperature blue)
so basicly, you buy 3 to 4 work lights, build some blinds, get some blue and some orange foil (cto for inside shots) buy some cheap light stands, maybe blackwrap for background lighting and voila: You have a "professional" Lighting kit for less than 100 dollars.

2) Sound: For me the most important part of a film. If you have bad sound, it doesnt matter how good the film is. I got some wind rattles in your video that you could remove for under 10 dollars. ill show you two methods i found when i started, the second one being the one with more work in it.

for the first you basicly need stuff you have at home anyway (probably) All you need is a modern phone and one of those earphone microphones that usually come with it. the one where you have 2 earplugs and a microphone hanging somewhere at your chest. Those things usually deliver pretty awesome sound quality if you are close enough. Now you dont need the ear plugs, so you can cut them off. Attach the microphone part to your actor under the shirt or somewhere invisible, and then record it with your phones internal recording program. will get you good audio as long as you dont run with it as it will create the tshirt rattling sound.
The other version is a DIY Shockmount for a boompole with a deadcat. i wont explain this one, because there is an excellent vid here:

3) shaky kamera
i dont know if this is supposed to be because of real life action and stuff, but i personally dislike shaky cameras, except maybe for war scenes.
and there is also an easy DIY fix for that. The steadycam :) again, a good vid is here:
YouTube - ‪Ryan's T2i Tips & Reviews - DIY Home Depot Steadicam‬‏
this is one of many possibilities, there are many other possible builds out there. but i think this is a good one.
i personally use this for most shots :

its one of the cheapest shoulderrig, and its really good
i know this german but just take the model number and google it :)

i hope i could help you a little with this :)

Hey thanks for watching, and I actually do appreciate the well thought-out notes you have for me.

You're absolutely right about the lighting. The lighting issue was something that happened because ON THE NIGHT our light actually broke, so we were stuck using the lighting in the area :unsure. I actually bought a new light just like the one you posted a pic of, and it's utilized in all the rest of the episodes for this season.

As for sound, ugh. Its the thing everyone mentions first... Again this was something that came out of us spending 3 months shooting this first season and I just had to get the first episode released. We were originally going to dub the dialogue for that first scene, but unfortunately I couldnt get the actress back in time to dub her dialogue, and having the rest of us dubbed and her not just got distracting. In the end I had to just bite my tongue and put the episode out with the flaw in it. That mic idea you posted about is VERY intriguing to me, and I'd like to get more details about that, so if you could PM me, that'd be MUCH appreciated.

And the shaky cam. I did that intentionally, as its supposed to be Law & Order-style, and thats what they do on the show. This is again something that is done better in later episodes, so just bear with us for now, haha.

Again, thanks much for the EXTREMELY helpful suggestions, which I will be utilizing when we start shooting Season 2, no question there.

Sounds like a great idea, I will definitely check it out. In italics, though, was done on "Spernatural", season 5 or 6.

Well as I've never seen, nor will ever watch an episode of Supernatural, its just a coincidence. Also, they're prolly not the first to have done a concept like this either, haha.
