Re: Ghostbusters 3

I'm sorry, but why the sudden surge in pessimism? We've known for a while that this was going to be an all female Ghostbusters team and only now with the cast announcement that the film is suddenly doomed? You're not even saying anything. What is wrong with this cast announcement? Do you not like the actors that were picked? Explain for god's sake.

Re: Ghostbusters 3

What I want to know is, why is it that when they want to kill a franchise, they have to make a garbage movie to do so? Why not just let the old ones be and not mess with it. We have Terminator, and now GB... Just let them be!

Re: Ghostbusters 3

I typically try to remain optimistic about these things, but this is going to suh-huck!

The one that stands out as the worst for me is McCarthy. I have seen three movies with her and I hated her with a passion at the end of each one. I am sure she cannot "dial it back" at all and it just grates on me after a while. The rest I am lukewarm about and while they have had some funny bits on SNL I have not been saying, "Man I wish _______ would get to star in her own movie!". So three "meh" choices and one I loath is just not going to make me run out and see this movie. Which is sad, since I love the Ghostbusters movies. :cry

The team that brought us two VERY unoriginal movies has now chosen the same actors from those unoriginal movies doesn't exactly inspire a lot of confidence that this remake will be anything other than a 2 hour string of campy just-add-water slapstick hijinks with the occasional unoriginal joke left over from the original to appease fans.

Do you really even need to see this movie at this point?

Spoiler alert: the black one is the one with most of the common sense in the group, There is a scene about how ecto plasm is 'yucky' but ultimately someone gets covered in it with some thinly veiled jizz jokes.

Hope I didn't ruin anything for you.

edit: BTW I DONT know that it will be bad. I actually did enjoy Bridemaids. It had a grand total of zero surprises in it. Canned plot, just add water, but I enjoy that sort of thing and unlike some of the others here, I like Melissa Mcarthy and Kristen Wiig (I have no idea if I spelled either right and am not going to bother looking it up).

This movie might be great. BUT, it's not like we haven't seen movies before and these are not fantastic signs. Right now the wind is blowing and black clouds are gathering. It might not rain, but I'm going to go ahead and not get my hopes up for that outdoor picnic.

Were one of those movies St. Vincent? If not, you might want to give St. Vincent a shot. Not only is she playing a more down to Earth character, she also acts with Bill Murray!

Re: Ghostbusters 3

Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, Melissa McCarthy.

If Ghostbusters reboot was an all male cast team with new actors playing Egon, Winston, Venkman and Ray, I would boycott the movie outright.

I am not interested in seeing any other actors playing those beloved characters. And it's those characters that makes Ghostbusters iconic.

So the premise of an all female cast who aren't tied to the lore of the original makes this reboot little easier to accept.

Ghosts, ghost hunting and paranormal investigation is a new phenomenon in this reboot universe. And Ghostbusters is the moniker they chose for their team. (Also cause Sony told them to)

Ghostbusters reboot cast is mainly a SNL cast/alumni, so it's going to be funny (though maybe not for some who didn't like their humor or who don't find woman funny in general).

And like Murray, Kate McKinnon is likely going to steal the show as she is pretty hilarious.

But the reboot will never equate to the greatness of the original Ghostbusters. Maybe it's not trying to be, but it will be measured to it regardless.

Re: Ghostbusters 3

From the moment they muted an all female Ghostbusters team, it was obvious McCarthy would be one of them, I just wish I had heard of the other three.

The original ghostbusters worked because the characters came pre loved.

By that I mean we had seen the actors in some of the biggest comedies of the last decade.

Now its the woman from all the films I haven't seen, and three others I have never heard of, this team is not pre loved.

Re: Ghostbusters 3

I'm not seeing it regardless. They did Ghostbusters. I have no interest in seeing more Ghostbusters regardless of who is in the film. It's been done. Try something original.

Re: Ghostbusters 3

Explain for god's sake.

I have nothing against the actresses chosen as I know almost nothing about them. I'm against the whole reboot idea because the original still stands the test of time and deserves to be discovered by new audiences. The original was one of those things that just sorta came together in that magical-movie-way whereas this just feels... artificial and exploitative. While I applaud including female Ghostbusters and am all-for equality, the all-female angle they seem to be pursuing feels very "gimmicky" and political in nature. Younger generations are only going to see the new version because Sony will quietly try to "forget" the old one in order to push the new.

Some films and shows don't age well (sorry, Original Galactica, but it's true, as much as I loved you as a child) and can therefore stand a reboot, but the original Ghostbusters still works. I would have been fine with a passing-of-the-torch continuation as a concept, even if it turned out badly, because the original would still be acknowledged.

The best-case scenario I can see is that this turns out to be like the Robocop reboot. It turns out a so-so film with some interesting ideas but since it was ultimately forgettable, it just hurts the franchise overall.

Re: Ghostbusters 3

You know what, I'm actually hoping that this "reboot" that is coming up is explained that the all-female crew is actually one of the franchises (like the Denver Ghostbusters).

But, I will be honest, McCarthy is okay in Mike and Molly (I've seen an occasional episode every once in a while). But I don't see her being the "heart of the Ghostbusters" if they're remaking the story. Honestly, I'd see her more of the Louis Tully that was originally meant for John Candy kind of person. However, any judgement I can make, I will honestly wait to see the film before proceeding.

Re: Ghostbusters 3

I was disappointed when they floated the all-female-cast idea. It seems very gimmicky. And to be perfectly blunt it hurts the realism of a show that depended on being a notch more realistic than typical SNL stuff. If the GB story was real then I could totally imagine some female members but I can totally not imagine an all-female group. Women can be scientists & techies but don't tell me they dominate the field. It's a possible, but very unlikely, scenario.

But now I'm warming up to this - a little. It is a well-chosen cast. MMcC wears on me but I'm hoping they/she will "dial it back" because she might work better in small doses. Farley or Belushi was a lot to handle in full-scenery-chewing mode all the time too.

It won't be the GB we want. But neither will anyone else they put in the movie today (including a partial 30-years-older original cast.)

I don't mind a reboot for the same reason I don't mind reboots in Terminator or lots of other things - after 30 years it just becomes the logical thing to do. If you stick within continuity then you can't redo the original storyline and that's what made it work best the first time.

Part of the fun of GB was watching those guys spend the whole movie struggling to get their minds around the idea that the whole thing was really happening. You can't recreate that if the new cast lives in a universe where GB has been around for 30 years. A continuation can be done but that doesn't mean it's the strongest option.
