Re: Ghostbusters 3 is a go!

The more I think about Aykroyd's idea for a story...the more I never, ever want to see this movie made.

I don't want to see a Ghostbusters film with Ray going blind, having a pirate's eye patch, Egon to fat to put a proton pack on, no Winston, and no Venkmen.

I'll just stick with playing the games with my son and reading the comics.

Sounds like a good plan, :lol

I would love for this to work...to see that iconic gear on screen, those sound effects..hell, make it a great NYC at Christmas movie.

But it sounds like they're not even sure on a script - they've had long enough to try, I just can't see in what possible way this could be any good.

It's inevitable. Another franchise that will get the defibrillator. The studios have done the math. Most of the people that were kids when ghostbusters I, II and the cartoon were popular are 25-35 years old now. They have money, nostalgia, and kids of their own. They'll go see the movie to relive part of their childhood, and then buy their kids the toys that they remember having so much fun with. *ka-ching

Re: Ghostbusters 3 is a go!

Star Trek TNG worked just fine with only very rarely referencing OS characters.
Look, give us a good solid story and script with actors that have the chops to pull it off and it will be good - with or without Murray.
I'm tired of this franchise being held back because of him.

Ah, but only if it has the right ingredients in terms of branding -- and that's where Murray not being involved would likely cause the same target audience to be disillusioned and cynical about the film. At that point, if Murray won't get on board, you might as well ditch all the old timers and start over from scratch completely. But even then, I'd expect the target market to be pretty unforgiving.

Re: Ghostbusters 3 is a go!

Tired of the franchise being "held back" because of Murray?!! :confused

Wow! I can't even wrap my head around that idea. I guess that's in part because I don't see everything as a "franchise." To me, Ghostbusters is a story. As Ramis put it, a "going-into-business story." That story was really satisfied with the first film, and the film never really needed a sequel.

We can spend more time with those characters, but it's hard to recapture what made the first one so special. They tried once, and obviously felt a need to revisit the first film's beats:

  • The four guys are down on their luck
  • They "start up" their Ghostbusting business. Apparently they know they're in a sequel, because they alter their logo to reflect that this is, indeed, Ghostbusters "II."
  • They're incarcerated until...
  • The end of the world approaches and...
  • Their case is made to the mayor (?!), who sets them free and gives them whatever they need to stop it
  • A 20-story figure (Liberty this time, Stay-Puft last time) makes its way through the city, crushing cars along the way
  • They save the world alone in a building, with throngs of cheering onlookers outside
  • What the heck, let's rewind Dana and Venkman's relationship along with the going-into-business story, so he can win her through the course of the movie all over again, too.

I can't imagine anyone loves the original movie as much as I do. I'm near-obsessed. I enjoy the second movie to some extent as well - more than most. There are some very good jokes in there, and some very fun moments. A great majority of them belong to Bill Murray, though. His style and delivery, more than anything else, is what shapes that undefinable special tone that makes Ghostbusters what it is. If Murray's not greenlighting a script, it's because it's unnecessary schlock. I appreciate his filter being in place on the Hollywood crud machine. The last thing I would accuse Murray of is holding back Ghostbusters in any way!

Re: Ghostbusters 3 is a go!

Where as I feel Murray's performance and lack of screen time of the other characters hurt the second film.

And Murray's not the same guy he was back then either. His movies are very different now to say the least.

Dump him, bring on Chevy Chase, just for the irony and make another film.

Ramis and Aykroyd are responsible for the funny in GB, certainly Murray does his part in the first one, but it's the writing.

Re: Ghostbusters 3 is a go!

While I liked 'most' of the first two, I was always disappointed in the endings. Giant Marshmallow Man, Walking Statue of Liberty... not pleased with the concept. The librarian ghost in the basement was classic. They needed to do more of that.

They did in the video game.

Re: Ghostbusters 3 is a go!

The video game was brilliant.
I'd be happy with a big-budget CG aminated feature with the origianl voices.
But if Murray holding out and playing games is whats stopping a new live action feature, I say find a way to tell a good story without him.
Thats my opinion and I know most will have my head on a stick for it, but its just how I feel.

Re: Ghostbusters 3 is a go!

I´m thinking about a one man Ghostbuster movie as well:

"Charly Sheen and the hounds of hell" :lol

Re: Ghostbusters 3 is a go!

Definitely a "going into business" movie. I think as a kid that really resinated with me, the nervousness of sort of stepping into the adult world. I got that same shiver when I first saw Hook and Ladder in the person on a December's morning last year!

Re: Ghostbusters 3 is a go!

Murray should at least do a small cameo. I am sure they could get him to do that. I love Ghostbusters. Can't wait to see what they come up with. If it sucks, I will just ignore it. But it is worth giving it a shot for the chance they might make something I will like.

Re: Ghostbusters 3 is a go!

And another child hood memory gets crapped on. Can't we just move along... how many remakes & sequels do we really need?

Re: Ghostbusters 3 is a go!

I would love a 3rd ghostbusters movie...

But not this revision and not without ALL FOUR ghostbusters.

Come on Bill! You had no problem with your cameo in zombieland (which was awesome!)

Do it smart ass and annoyed... you know the way your character Venkman always was... the way you are in real life...

Then just collect a paycheck. You can even laugh at us for paying to see it!!!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh!!!!!

Re: Ghostbusters 3 is a go!

Sometimes I feel that Murray is deliberately holding this movie back because he knows it won't be much without him.

Re: Ghostbusters 3 is a go!

GB3 would be awsome but there are so many ways this could go wrong. Look at Indiana Jones. It all sounds great on paper until someone goes chasing cristal skulls. I say re-boot it if it's going to happen. I want to remember the original crew as they were in the 80's. Not as old guys.
